How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I now have my own milk which I did not have before I received the money. I have increased the size of my land under agriculture too
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did so well in giving unconditional cash

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was eagerly awaiting for the money we had been promised and the moment I received transfers from Give Directly I felt so happy. I knew indeed the dream of having a dairy cow shall come true. I was over joyed as I had never gotten such an amount before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
For a long time, I have been willing to rear dairy cow in my compound but because of the financial difficulties, I could not afford it. I had other issues to attend to like paying school fees with the little money which I would earn from farming and casual jobs. I am so glad now because Give Directly actualized my dream because I managed to buy a lactating dairy cow. The offspring that I will have from the animal shall be assets which shall cushion me in case of a financial need.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfers on buying a cow worth KES 35000. I bought a dairy cow because I needed one so that I would have some milk for use at home. The remaining amount I spent to buy some food items, utensils and cushions.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Securing the future education of my kids has been my dream. I intend to use part of the first transfer of $500 to buy a small herd of cattle and graze them for quite sometime as they give birth and multiply. This will generate a reliable source of school fee(through selling them) for my kids who are still in primary level when the time for them to reach secondary and tertiary level comes. I will also use my second transfer to upgrade my already existing mud house to a semi permanent one and add another extra room for my kids to use it while studying in the evening after school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After I am done with the normal household chores, I milk the one cow I have and chop some feeds for her. I then prepare lunch for my kids who are coming from school for lunch. In the afternoon I take my cow to the nearby water pan to drink water. In the evening I milk the cow again and take some milk to the nearby market center to sell and in turn use the money to buy foodstuff for supper. It is at this time that I feel happy since I know my family will have something to take for supper.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Provision of quality education to my kids has been an unfulfilled promise I made to myself. Currently they are all studying in a nearby local public school that has been performing poorly over the past years. Had I had the means, I could have changed school for them but with myself being a housewife and my husband doing casual work, we do not have hope of changing this situation soonest. As a result I pray that my kids will make it through and have a successful future regardless of whether I will be able to change the school for them or not.
