How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I working had to ensure improved productivity of my business. For over a year now, I had been hunting and selling livestock both in the nearby markets and in the village. This activity is so demanding that I have to be away from home almost daily in search of livestock to buy or take them to the market for sale. I don't have any new goal at the moment but working on this business alongside continuous subsistence farming to ensure the availability of enough foodstuff in my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I attribute the happiness within the village at the moment to GiveDirectly in that many households transformed their families through the purchase of livestock, and construction of new houses, while others bought pieces of land through the financial support they got. This support was the first in my life to receive such a huge amount of unconditional transfer alongside every other household in the village. I have no complaint but gratitude t9 the smooth process that ensured they enrolled every household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After spending my first transfer on the construction and purchase of livestock, I was glad to receive the second transfer. I spent KES 20000 on clearing school fees for my form two sons who have currently settled down and seamlessly studying with the other students. I also spent KES 10000 on equipping all my four children with new school uniforms and other clothes they were missing. In addition, I bought new pieces of furniture worth KES 12000 for the newly completed house and used the remaining amount to buy a sheep with a lamp. I am grateful for the support and hope to see more changes going forward.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes to 7 am and I was getting out of bed when I received a message alert on my phone. I became so happy on realizing that GiveDirectly had finally sent a sum of KES 55000 as they had promised that we would receive it before mid of the month. I informed my family about it and they were equally happy to know that our lives would soon change for the better. We decided to wait for a day before cashing it out as we revisited the plans that we had.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have been able to acquire a live asset which is an investment to me. It would have taken me a long period of time to save towards the purchase of the dairy cow and I am glad that GiveDirectly made it possible within a short time. I will forever remain grateful to them for the impact they have made in my life and that of my family at large.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying a dairy cow was our priority as a family since we needed something that we would use as a remembrance of GiveDirectly in our lives. Because of this, I spent KES 30000 from the transfer to buy one, used KES 4700 on food and clothes, and saved KES 20000 that I am planning to use in paying school fees for my daughter in secondary school. The dairy cow is a live investment to me that will enable us to earn extra income through the sale of surplus. I am a businessman and I have three children at different levels of education and our lastborn has not started school since he is still young. I am happy that with the transfer, I was able to make an investment that will later help me in educating them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me to improve my kitchen. The kitchen that I have is grass thatched and it has been a while since I replaced the grass because of its unavailability. I plan to replace the grass with iron for a cost of KES 15000 because it is more durable and it will not leak. I plan also to buy a dairy cow that will provide us with milk since I have three children that require milk for their growth.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The constant rainfall that our area received in the last months has enabled us to do some farming. I was lucky to harvest a good amount of maize that I currently use to feed my family. This has brought me joy and I m grateful that my family has enough food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The unavailable jobs and income are some of the major challenges that I am currently facing. I buy and sell goats on commission in markets that enable me to sustain my family. There are times that business can be tough and I end up getting no jobs for some time and this makes it difficult for me to provide for my family.
