How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My child has been suffering for a very long time and the recommended surgery had been pending since we did not have funds to facilitate the bills. But I am glad this has been made possible thanks to GD's transfers. I might have been able to meet other goals but this was life-changing moment for me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think it is impactful and beneficial to most of the people who have received the cash. Living standards have improved and many have been empowered to reach their goals. It is the best thing to ever happen in our community.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my recent transfer, I spent Kes 25,000 to purchase a cow and a bull for rearing. They will help in plowing the farm and this will reduce the cost incurred to hire workers. The remaining amount was spent on medication bills. My son was scheduled for urgent surgery and I am glad this transfer came in handy.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My two-year-old child has been sick and suffering as a result of a deformity of the mouth. My little savings could not meet the cost of correcting the deformity which the medical specialists needed. I was not at peace seeing my child daily in that state until GiveDirectly came to me. When I received my first transfer, I could not wait to take my child to the hospital. He is currently under medication, courtesy of GiveDirectly. I am grateful to the organization for it would have taken me years for my child to get medical attention. It's a great joy for me as he has already regained health
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have never been happy in my life as the day I received a message on my phone, confirming that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I thanked them for this money since immediately I got it, what rolled into my mind until morning was giving my son reward of a medical correction. It was the biggest relieve I have ever felt in my life!
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer to seek medical attention for my son who was born with a mouth deformity. I am grateful that he is under medication for the correction. I would not have been able to raise this much on my own because the money that was required was way beyond my budget. Secondly, I managed to purchase an ox worth KES 18500. I had another ox but my aim has been to ensure that I have a complete pair to aid my farming. Having a complete set is an assurance of doing my farming early enough for a better harvest.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Paying hospital bills for my child who has a congenital split at the roof of the mouth, a condition called cleft lip or palate, is generally what receiving this money means to me. I plan to spend my first transfer on his medication bills because as of today we have failed to take him to the specialist despite having been referred since January 2018. On the other hand, my other plan was to spend at most 450 dollars on livestock specifically 10 goats at $30 each and 1 indigenous cow at $15. This will be my long term investment plan that will help me to cater to my future expenses. Hence, a better life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day because waking up healthy gives me the feeling of doing my day's work. I spend much of my morning hours working energetically in my farm. In the afternoon, I usually look after my goats and my evening meets me when exhausted after a heavy day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I gave birth to my child with a congenital split of the upper lip, a condition which astonished me because I never came across such abnormality before. I have tried to find means of taking him to hospital but because of the financial crisis we undergo as a family, I have never managed this issue. This condition has robbed my joy since the boy is growing and we have never corrected that through surgery which we were referred to. I have wished to have a job that can supplement the little income from my husband but since I am a mere housewife, this wish has been an unfulfilled need. Therefore, the lack of a reliable source of income has been my biggest hardship.
