How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
God willing, I hope to see my cereal business grow in the coming year so that I can build my savings through a sacco. At the moment, I anticipate that the burden of paying school fees will be lessened because my daughter will be attending university and will be awarded a student loan to cover her school fees. These savings will help me diversify my business by allowing me to purchase a dairy cow that will produce milk not only for my own consumption but also surplus for sale as an additional source of income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an excellent job in our village, which pleased many participants. I have accomplished a lot in a short period of time, for which I'm grateful, and I'm hopeful that the current projects will aid in the launch of new ones. From the initial stages, where we held informative meetings, to receiving the transfers, the enrollment process was smooth. In my opinion, the only member of the village who was struggling and receiving help from the church was a mother of three children. Her children's health has been poor, and because she cannot afford to pay their medical bills or provide them with basic necessities, she has become frustrated, affecting her mental health. She felt like she went missing when she realized she could not enroll, leaving her two children in the old hut she had been living in and leaving with the younger one. I wish she had been considered for the transfers because it would have allowed her to start over like any other member of the village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of five children, three of whom are still in school. Paying their school fees and meeting all of our household obligations has been extremely difficult because I am solely reliant on my cereal business. I am glad my elder son has been working hard to establish his family, and he recently purchased a piece of land after receiving the money and a $200 support from my transfer. I also cleared a $100 school fee arrears for my daughter, who just finished her grade 12 exams and is now awaiting her results. In addition, I invested the remaining funds in my cereal business, which aided in its expansion. Right now, I am selling sorghum, millet, beans, and pineapples. The profits from the business have helped me pay household bills and school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Early that morning we were traveling with my daughter to check on her medical school enrollment. I had my phone ring and upon checking, it was the promised transfer. We were so excited and we withdrew the money immediately we alighted.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is all that I have achieved so far. I am grateful for the transformation that I have witnessed in my household and also to Givedirectly for choosing me to participate in this project.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Clearance of school fees after receiving the first transfer was one of my priorities. My daughter who is in medical school had arrears and I sent her KES 17,000 which she used to clear the balance. I am glad since she was able to study peacefully and also able to do her end-of-semester exams. I also purchased a heifer at KES 27,000 which is an addition to my other livestock. The heifer will in the future help improve milk supply. The remaining amount, I spent in purchasing foodstuffs for my seven family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a widow and as such, I am the bread winner for my family . My life turned for the worse when my husband passed on. I have 4 children who are in secondary school, one is due for college but there is no money to take her to school. This has disturbed me a lot, I do not have peace of mind. The situation is often exacerbated whenever they are sent home for fees. I want the best for my children, to have a better future than mine. Receiving this money will bring a paradigm shift in their lives since I intend to pay them the school fees more so for the one who is joining Kenya Medical Training College, I have held her for a long. I plan to use KES 80000 to pay school fees and use the rest of the money to buy a calf.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my daughter excelled in her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, I was so elated. I felt that my struggle of raising school fees had not gone in vain. She got a C+ that has earned her a place at Kenya Medical Training Institute to study nursing. I am certain her future will be bright and she will take care of me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
This month and last month have been the hardest for me in terms of raising the school fees of about KES 30000 for this term. I am a peasant farmer and sometimes I pay the school fees in kind using beans produce. But last season the vagaries of weather affected it and I was not able to pay school fees with it. I have had to look for other means including borrowing from relatives. If I ever manage to pay the school fees I think I will not be bothered in life again.
