How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes. I have an additional goal that I did not have before receiving this transfer. I have two children in secondary school and for them to perform well, I have to pay for their school fees on time so that they do not miss classes. This was clearly shown when I cleared their school fees with part of the transfers. I am, therefore, planning to start saving some money in advance from my business such that by the time they resume school from end term holidays then all their school fees are ready.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly did good work by giving people unconditional cash. Through this people got the chance to achieve a lot that they could not. I have witnessed a lot of transformation in our village. There are no more conflicts which in most cases resulted from the inability to provide for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It was unfortunate that my son was involved in an accident while they were playing in school with their fellow students. This left him with a fracture on one of his legs. I, therefore, spent KES 20000 of the second transfer on his medication. I am glad the fracture was fixed, and he is recuperating well. Besides, I also paid KES 22000 in school for my two children's secondary school fees so that I could clear the fee arrears they owed the school. They have not been sent back home as was the case before. This gave them enough time for their studies, and I am proud to see them improving their grades. A portion of the money (KES 10000) I spent on both foodstuffs and clothes for my children. They now have decent clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way to the posh mill when I received a notification message on my phone. Upon checking, It was a receipt of Ksh.55,000 from Give directly. I was so excited and immediately went and withdrew part of it since I had a matter of urgency. I was thankful that it came through in a time I needed it most.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is seeing my son in good health and also rejoining the rest of the pupils in school. I am now at peace and I thank Give directly for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my first transfer, I spent Kshs.20,000 as a deposit for purchasing a motorcycle. This was a business goal I had in mind since my son could run it hence making everything easier. I am happy that the motorcycle business has already commenced and picking very well. For the longest time my some had an injury on his leg but I didn't have money to take him to the hospital .With Ksh.10,000 I took him for medication and he is now recupurating well and he has also gone back to school and he is catching up with his school work.I also purchased a heifer worth Ksh.24,000 since I had one but didn't produce enough milk.I am grateful that in a few months it will calf and we will be able to get enough milk for consumption for my seven family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better education for my children. My husband passed on nine years ago therefore making me a breadwinner to my family of 2. I opened up a maize business at Chebunyo 2 years later to support the family. Unfortunately, the business failed as I used all the profit and the capital to pay school fees for my last born son in grade 9. I will set apart KES 70000 as school fees for my 2 sons in grade 9 and grade 12. They will consequently have a chance to be educated and hence have a better life in future. As a result, my dream of a brighter future for my children will have been achieved.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I habitually wake up at 6 O'clock in the morning, prepare breakfast and subsequently milk my 2 cows. I then sell the milk to the vendors who in return pay for the milk (KES 90 ). It's at this point that I purchase food for my household. On that account I am always in the afternoon for I have food for my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability has been my biggest hardship. I am a widow and a breadwinner to my family of 3. Besides, I solely depend on selling milk to earn income (KES 90 per day). This is inadequate to pay school fees for my children as I use all of this to purchase food for my household.
