Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9:30 am. I was on my farm cultivating my crops. When I heard a ringtone message from my phone, when I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I stopped whatever I was doing and rushed back home to inform my family members. They were so happy too and celebrated with lots of joy. I knew I would be able to buy a piece of land which was our main priority and focus that time. I went and withdrew the money the same day and planned on how to spend the rest with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a piece of land. I spend KES 51,500 to purchase the land. This was always our main priority and focus. We had a small piece of land and everytime we do farming the harvest was so small and could not last for long. Buying food the all season was costly and this was our main challenge. I depend on casual jobs and small scale farming. The amount of money that I would get was so small and it's only for household basic needs. I didn't had any extra money to invest. Currently we have own a land and we have fenced it ready for planting. We are happy because we know that in the next coming season our family would get a good harvest and we will not lack food. We will save the money that we would have used to buy food for other things. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own a piece of land. This is a blessing because it could have taken quite some time to own this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 51,500 to purchase a place of land. We have a small land at home and our main priority was to buy a land and do horticulture farming. We will be able to get enough food for the family. They rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled us to fulfilled our dream of owning a land. This was always on our mind but we didn't had the money to do so. Currently we have fenced the farm and we are yet to invest on it.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My land is low land .It floods alot when it rains ,crops hardly grow and nearly all the land is unproductive. When it rains it gets logged and the water enters even to my house . It is also breeds mosquitoes and snails that can cause malaria and waterborne diseases respectively. Intend to buy a land elsewhere when I can settle. My plan is to buy 0.2 acres at a cost of USD 600. The rest of the money will go towards building a house in the said land.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when Iam done with household chores . I derive alot of pleasure in spending time with my children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food security is a big issue here .The land is unproductive and we rarely get any produce . This was worsened by the maize lethal necrosis disease that came about 5 years ago. It is a real struggle to put food on the table .
