How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I'm very old, I can't do hard work anymore. But my plan is to focus more on taking care of my animals. It's easier to look after them, and they don't need a lot of work, which suits my age.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Every morning, I wake up and take my goats and cows to drink water. By noon, I'm back home. One day, some people from Givedirectly came to visit me. I didn't know about it before, but I accepted the free money after they explained it to me. I'm really happy and grateful because now I have extra goats and cows that I can sell if I need money in an emergency. Please keep doing your good work and helping people get out of poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $250 to buy a female cow because I know it will have babies and become a valuable investment for the future. It's a project I've wanted to do for a long time, but I didn't have the money. I also bought a goat for $50, and it's already had babies. That makes me really happy because I know in five years, I'll have lots of goats. Right now, I have around 50 goats. I used $50 to pay for my youngest daughter's school fees at Kesup Girls in Eldoret. She lives with her mother and my eldest son in Tambach. I live alone here to take care of my animals. I still have around $100 in my account, waiting for someone to come and finish building my house. I already bought the materials for it earlier.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have ambitious plans for the upcoming year and beyond, primarily focused on expanding my goat herd. With this recent transfer, I have acquired one more goat, bringing the total to 16. Given that I live in a dry region with conducive thicket and shrubbery for goat rearing, it is a promising investment. These goats will serve multiple purposes, including providing milk and meat for consumption when needed and serving as a valuable asset for selling to cover expenses like food and school fees for my children. Additionally, I am looking to diversify my agricultural activities and plan to venture into groundnut farming on my 2-acre piece of land, leveraging the available water from the nearby river to manage this new venture efficiently. These plans signify my determination to enhance both my family's sustenance and financial stability.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing something remarkable by providing us with unconditional cash, a novel experience for me. This support has allowed me to plan and accomplish various tasks, and I am committed to working hard with the remaining funds to further transform my household. I value the organization's follow-up to ensure that everyone receives and utilizes the money wisely, motivating us to stay focused on our plans without unnecessary expenditures. I have no complaints but instead express gratitude for the generous support. My hope is that similar support reaches other communities grappling with poverty, bringing about positive changes just as it has for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Covering the school fees for my two children in secondary school has often led to selling off livestock, a trend I wanted to change. With $250 from the second transfer, I invested in a six-month in-calf cow and a goat, aiming to rebuild my livestock holdings for future sustainability and addressing various bills. Additionally, I spent $105 to purchase 10 iron sheets, a crucial step in replacing the aged grass-thatched hut I have lived in for over six years. The new house will offer better protection during rainy seasons. Currently residing alone after my children moved to the land I purchased with their mother, I spent $21 on half a sack of dry maize for sustenance. Further, I used $10 in household goods, including kitchen essentials and toiletries. The remainder was saved for acquiring additional construction materials; already ordered from a supplier. This approach reflects my commitment to securing my family's future and improving our living conditions.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can vividly recall the moment when I received my transfer from GiveDirectly. I was enjoying a moment of relaxation at home when my helper came to inform me about the money. My phone suddenly rang, and an overwhelming sense of joy washed over me. The realization that I now had the means to pursue my dreams filled me with excitement, and I immediately began brainstorming the most effective strategies for using the funds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The most significant change in my daily life is the newfound ability to enjoy three meals a day, which is a stark contrast to the past when we often had to make do with just one meal or sometimes even went to bed hungry. This remarkable transformation can be largely attributed to the financial assistance I received. Thanks to this support, I was able to acquire a sack of maize, a precious resource that now ensures a consistent and abundant food supply for my household. This is a stark departure from the hardships we used to endure, constantly struggling to make ends meet. Additionally, I am confident that I will be able to construct a decent house in the near future. I am overflowing with gratitude for the assistance provided, as it has greatly enhanced our overall quality of life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The assistance provided by GiveDirectly has truly been a blessing for me. Being a farmer living alone in this village while my family resides in Keiyo, I wasted no time in putting the initial transfer to good use. My first priority was purchasing building materials, which cost $100. I then used With the remaining funds, I secured essential food supplies, as I had grown accustomed to eating only once a day due to the prolonged drought and also paid school fees for my children. In an astonishingly short period, I accomplished so much, all thanks to the financial support from GiveDirectly. This was an achievement I never thought possible given our previous financial limitations. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity that has transformed my life for the better

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The top of my priority is to have a better house. I plan to build a 2-roomed house. The cost of the house will be at least $500. I have relatives who can assist me with wood and poles for the house. Saving me some money. The house will make me happy since I will have a good place. This means my visitors can come at any point. Due to the drought. I will buy food for my family. To spend approximately $150. Meaning my family has a stable food supply for the next 2 months. I must also invest in my future. I need to add more goats to boost my stock. I will buy 4 more. At an average of $30 per goat. Goats do well here. To also diversify my livestock. I will buy one cow. It will cost me $200. This means I will have enough milk for domestic use. To prepare tea or sell some for an extra income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It's my joy having goats. I have 30 of them plus the little ones. It makes me happy since I can sell them and feed my family. Furthermore, pay for my children's education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My house is in bad shape. It's made of grass roof and sticks on the wall. This is not safe since animals can easily enter and it's also very cold. I must always ensure I have enough firewood for the night. This keeps me warm and also chases away wild animals. This is not easy for me. Especially during the rainy season as the house becomes extremely cold. This is my biggest worry. I cannot also have visitors here due to the poor state of my house.
