How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though the burden of paying my children's school fees is still pressing at the moment, I have a list of goals that I hope to accomplish in the future. I was running a clothing business before receiving the GiveDirectly transfer, which I eventually shut down when I ran out of stock. At the moment, I am looking forward to reviving it because it is the simplest way to generate income that will also raise school fees for my two sons.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an excellent job in our village, transforming livelihoods through the innovative free cash transfer. For many years, we struggled to raise our children in poverty, which was put to an end when GiveDirectly provided support with the option of deciding how to spend it. The program was so fair that no member who lived within the village's boundaries was denied the opportunity to enroll. I am also pleased that the approach ensured that everyone was visited and later received direct transfers into their accounts. There was nothing wrong with the project, and I will be eternally grateful and wish GiveDirectly the best.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received the second transfer while my new house was still being built and needed some funding for the walls. It was such a relief to receive the second patch that I spent $330 on materials to finish the walls and part of the painting. I also used the remaining $200 to pay off my two sons' secondary school tuition arrears. I am pleased that they are now attending all of their classes with the other students, and I trust this will improve their grades at the end of the semester. Getting rid of this burden has also given me more time to work on other projects that will ensure a steady supply of food and other household goods for my family of eight.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 am. When I was checking my phone as Usual. I got a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I have never received such an amount of money before. I felt so happy and immediately informed my family members. It was one of the happiest mornings we have ever had. I stayed for two days planning with my family how to spend the transfer. I knew I would be able to purchase the building materials and build a better and more spacious house for my family. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is being able to purchase the building materials ready to build a better and more spacious house for my family. I have purchased the iron sheet and timber that are needed. I am still collecting other materials and I will start the construction soon. This alone has given me hope since I had always wished to own q decent house. We live in a small mud house that cannot comfortably host all my family members. This was so demoralizing whenever I have visitors and friends. I have no extra space to host them. Maintaining a mud house is also tedious since it needs smearing weekly to make it less dusty. GiveDirectly has given me hope in that I know in the next few months I will have completed the construction and move in with my family. We will no longer be exposed to dusty related particles and we will live a much better life than before. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 42,300 on purchasing iron sheets and timber. I am still putting all the necessary materials ready to start the construction process. I live in a small house and I wish to build a better house for the family. I am so grateful because I know soon the process will kick off and I will have to fulfill the dream that I had always wished to do. I paid KES 10,000 school fees for my two children in various schools. I am so happy because they are studying well without being disturbed like before. The rest of the money I spend on food and household items. GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to purchase a piece of land. Currently, I am leaving in family land and my share is 0.5 acres however it is not sufficient for me since I would like to do farming as my source of income. I love farming and having a small piece of land is limiting my potential of having a dairy farm. So when I receive this transfer I will spend my entire transfer to purchase 0.2 acres of land. In this land, I will plant dairy feeds for my cows as I already have 2 cows but getting feeds has been a challenge. This will enable my cows increase their yield that will enable me to generate income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
With the little money I earn from casual jobs, I make KES 200 contribution to our village table banking. Two months ago I was given the contribution and I received KES 30000 which enabled me to construct a house for my sons to sleep in as it is taboo for sons to sleep with their parents after circumcision. This has brought joy and happiness into my life as they no longer have to go to people's houses to sleep.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is food insecurity. I have a family of 8 members and to feed all of them I need a lot of food or rather a good source of income. This has not been achievable since I have a small piece of land 0.5 acres which is not sufficient to grow food crops. Its yield is low due to limited space and getting money for purchasing food after depletion is also a challenge since I am a casual laborer and getting those casual jobs is also a challenge.
