How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, it is hard for me to have a specific goal that I would wish to achieve because of the school fees responsibilities, which have been an uphill task. I have two children at the university and two in primary school.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave us the money directly to our mobile phone, just the way they had promised. This made it impossible for the corrupt individual out there to access our funds. The process was swift, and they gave us the opportunity for us to decide how well we would utilise our funds. In my opinion, I feel that they should do a thorough investigation of the ineligible household before ruling out that they are imposters and they should do it in uniformity in all the villages to avoid conflicts.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
School fees responsibilities have been the biggest challenge that I have been dealing with. This is because I am a single mother of four children. Two are at university and the other two are in primary school and I depend on farming to earn a livelihood. Before the support from GiveDirectly came, I did a fundraising to send my firstborn to the university because of financial constraints, since I don't have a reliable source of income. But when I received the support, this made things easier because I comfortably paid the fee for the second-born son, where I used $350. I felt that it lifted a heavy burden off my shoulder, thus I was grateful. Secondly, I bought an iron sheet worth $180. This will allow me to build an iron sheet house because the one that I am living in is grass-thatched. I am so grateful for the support that gave us hope for a better tomorrow.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I work as a mixed farmer and at the time when I received my transfer, I was relaxing after weeding some crops. I felt so happy as I knew that the money would support me as a farmer. I had never received such an amount before and that excited me a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
These transfers changed my life, now I have a cow that I didn't have before. I have paid school fees for my child in good time. I never had planned to do all these anytime soon but these transfers have enabled me to make this advancement in life. Now I earn more money through the sale of milk and the money helps me to buy basic needs for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had one cow which would give me 5 liters per day and had a plan of buying another cow so that I can increase milk production. When I got my transfer, I bought another cow for KES 38000 which gives me up to 7 liters at the moment. I then spent KES 15000 on paying university fees for my child and that eased my burden. The rest, I spent on buying some foodstuffs and clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean a reduction in unending financial problems. I am a single mother of four who does subsistence farming to provide for her children. The situation that I am in right now is hard because I have two children in college and two in junior school whose school arrears need to be cleared. I have tried selling maize but in vain and receiving these transfers will allow me to clear the arrears. Once I am done with the arrears, I plan on constructing a house on the land that my father allocated to me because the land that I live in currently belongs to my step-mother.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter completed high school in March and earned good marks that saw her secure a place in college. I am happy that she will be able to continue with school and achieve her dreams.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The current challenge that I have is paying college fees for my daughter who joined last year and the one that is set to join. I am worried about this because the money that I get from selling maize will not sustain this and I will have to look for money by fundraising from my neighbors.
