How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far so good because I do not have any new goals apart from the ones that I had in mind. The main one was to build a new house and I am so happy that this was achieved. The initial one was very small in size which forced my children to sleep at my relative's houses. I am happy that we now live happily in a decent shelter. This has restored the joy and peace in our lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done a very good job in my community. Our lives have greatly improved in such a way that most of us who own permanent iron-roofed houses from temporary huts. Also, 80% of us have livestock in our compounds. Which are the valuable assets that we have been longing to have for quite some time. Therefore I do not see anything that GiveDirectly has not done well in my village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying iron sheets at KES 13600, building poles at KES 15000. This was for the construction of a new house for my sons who have been sheltering at their friend's bodies because our house was small in size. Also since they are grown up it was taboo to share the same shelter with them. As a mother, I am so glad that this was achieved. To add to that, I cleared a debt of KES 8000. Also, I paid school fees of KES 11000 for my six children who are in primary and secondary schools respectively. They are now studying without any hindrance. Later on, I bought two goats at KES 6000 which have been serving as the assets that I can lean on anytime. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember very well, it was around 9 AM when I was at my business place ( selling vegetables like tomatoes, kales) when I heard my phone ringing continuously. I was so curious and without wasting time, I decided to check the content of the message only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was extremely happy because I knew that finally, I would achieve most of my long-time goals. Together with my family members, we started celebrating such a blessing in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now hopeful and happier in life. This is as a result of the new house that I managed to construct through financial help. The previous one was very small and almost collapsing, its roof was dilapidated and leaking during the winter season, and to be honest, I never enjoyed the peace of living in a decent house for years. Being a casual laborer, earning KES 300 in a day was not enough for even the daily meal for the ten family members. Some of my children had to seek shelter from our neighbors and relatives especially whenever it rained. I couldn't afford to buy any of the necessary materials just to renovate it. I am so grateful because for now, I no longer have to worry about rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of of my first transfer on buying several building materials which include, building poles at KES 5000, twenty pieces of iron sheets at KES 14000, nails, timber, and a wooded door at a total of KES 10000. I had to purchase all these with an aim of constructing a new house because the previous one was small and had an old roof. During the rainy seasons, we used to be rained on till dawn which was affecting our health. Besides that, with the ten family members, it could not accommodate us all and they had to seek shelter elsewhere which was so stressful. I later gave the mason KES 15000 as his labor charge. In addition to that, I cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my daughter who is in her final year in secondary school. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money mean better housing to my household. This is because I am now sharing one bedroom house with my children which does not give me privacy.I am planning to spend Kshs.30,000 to build a two bedroom house that will be enough for all of us.I will also use Ksh 21,000 to clear fee balance and also spend Kshs.38,500- of second transfer to pay school fees for my daughter who is in form four. The remaining amount will cater for other basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. This is because When I wake up I sing gospel song inorder to praise the Lord for giving me Life, something that fulfill s my heart.Unlike in the afternoon and evening hours when I am tired after the house hold chores.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity. This is because rains are erratic not enough leading to poor yields.I am a housewife and my husband depend on casual labor that earns him very little.Due to this I have been struggling to get food for my household forcing me to skip meals, situation that does I really dislike.
