How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
A lot has happened ever since I received my transfers and I would like to mention some that have made my life very different. Initially, I use to sleep on some old mats and old clothes on the floor. In regards to that, I used to encounter so many challenges such, severe back pains, suffocation because of the dust, and every moment I had to seek medical attention. I am now happy because I no longer complain of the pains and I even healthier comped to be free. Also, the solar panel has been of help especially at night. Previously I was using candles which were relatively costly and sometimes I used to stay in the dark since I could not afford to buy them. Nowadays I have enough lighting at night and also I can as well to charge my phone
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in such a way that, every household has transformed positively. Most of us now have permanent houses, livestock, businesses, also we have been able to pay school fees for our children on time. This is as a result of, the money was unconditional hence given a chance to fulfill our heart desires. On other hand, I did not use any part GiveDirectly there is nothing that GiveDirectly is not doing well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying 12 bags of cement at KES 580 each. This was for the plastering of my house since its walls and the floor was in bad condition. I also spent KES 5000 of the money to pay the mason as his labor charge on the job well done. Also, I bought three goats which cost KES 3500 each and three chickens which are now serving as the living assets that I am depending on any time. In addition, I bought decent clothes which were a replacement for the old torn rags that we have been wearing. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 in the morning when I was still in bed when my phone started ringing continuously. Without hesitating, I decided to check what the message was all about. Upon checking, I realized it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly, they had debited my first transfer as they had promised earlier. I felt so happy because I knew I would achieve a lot. I remember coming out of my bed fully awake.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have has been in a marriage for so many years, but for all that long I have been sleeping on some old mats and rags. I have been yearning to at least sleep in a small bed but I could not afford it due to the poverty life that stricken my household. I was always attacked by some harmful insects such as bedbugs and sometimes I was unable to sleep till dawn. Also, I developed some back pains as a result of sleeping in an uncomfortable place. It has really been hectic all along. I am now a happy soul after GiveDirectly empowered me to buy my own bed and a good mattress. I can now sleep comfortably and having sweet dreams like the rest. I also no longer complain about the back pains nor the harmful insects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some bedding such as a new bed and a mattress. This was to replace the old traditional bed that I have been using for all that long. Also, I bought a metal door to replace the wooden one which had spoilt. In addition, I bought a solar panel that is now helping me to light my house at night and charging my phone. Apart from that, I bought some windows to fix my house. Besides that, I bought a traveling bag and clothes for my children. With the remaing amount, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me finish up constructing my house. My roof leaks during the rainy season and the house has no doors or windows. I will also buy a bed which I currently do not have. I will then spend the rest on buying three goats for rearing. This goats will be of help to me financially in the near future;for example in paying school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend the morning hours doing house chores like cleaning the utensils, the compound and fetching water. I then go to the farm and later in the afternoon ,I fetch firewood. At the end of the day I am usually very tired . Evening is the happiest part of my day since I get to rest after a busy day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on casual jobs to earn a living. This casual jobs earn me very little. I depend on working on other people's farms and selling charcoal. I earn 2 USD or less from working in the farms while a bag of charcoal cost 3 USD. This is very little compared to the needs I have. This jobs are also scarce. This low income has been my biggest hardship.
