How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was able to build a business premise with my second transfer. Therefore, my main goal at the moment is to be able to start up a retail shop by bringing in goods to the existing shop. To make this work, plan to raise money from selling the farm produce.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The organization lifted a heavy burden off my back the minute I received my transfer. In my opinion, GiveDirectly has empowered everyone in my village. Thus transforming our living standards. People have built houses, others bought cows and many more. I have not seen any loophole in GiveDirectly's work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a consistent farmer and a mother of ten children. My husband works as a Masonry. It has always been my dream to build a business premise, but this was not possible because of financial constraints due to the school fees responsibilities. Therefore, upon receiving my transfer, I Used KES 20,000 on building the business house. Additionally, I paid the school fees arrears for my children, and finally; I bought a heifer with the remaining amount. I am grateful for the chance that they gave me to transform my living standard in a short period.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was almost 10 am and I was in my kitchen garden weeding vegetables when suddenly I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I stopped to check it and I was so happy when I opened the SMS and I read that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. My children who were with me at the farm noticed that there was a sudden change of mood and hence they asked me what had transpired. I told them the good news and they were so happy about it. We thanked God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because we managed to pay school fees for our children and hence we have rested a bit and we have had some peace of mind having done so. We have managed to get enough money for buying food unlike before where most of the money that we were earning, used to go to the payment of school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 15500 of our recent transfer on paying school fees for one of our children who is in a day secondary school. We managed to pay for the whole academic year and a half. Getting money for paying school fees has always been our biggest challenge since we do not have stable sources of income. I usually practice farming where I usually grow crops such as maize and vegetables for sale. My husband on the other end is a mason. The money that we get from our income-earning activities, most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for our 4 children and buying food. We also spent some of the money on buying clothes for our children and maize for our consumption. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying iron sheets for completing the construction of a business premise. We were not able to complete the construction because we lacked the money. We want to open a shop business that is going to help us get more income. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better education for my children. I have a family of 8 children and 4 of them are now in secondary school. I am currently doing a construction work in a nearby school. From this job I can earn an average of KES.400 per day as my daily income. We end up spending in buying food and other household needs. My children have been at home due to a huge amount of school fees areas KES.70,000. Today I am happy that from Givedirectly transfers my children will have a better education. I plan to settle the areas and use the remaining balance to buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was happy two months ago when one of our son got an opportunity of joining military. We have 8 children and non of them has been able to secure a job. It has been a milestone of struggling but when the opportunity came we all got happy about it in the family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently the main challenge is lack of a stable income in the family. With my family of 8, and earning an average of KES400 per day is not enough to feed for my family. I am worried that the future of my children will be ruined if I will not pay for their school fees. In some days we can end up sleeping without taking a meal. It is a great opportunity for my family and it is going to be a new dawn when we get this transfers.
