How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm planning to spend some money this year on acquiring a few farm animals, ideally goats as they are less expensive than cows. This is so that I'll have a backup plan in case I encounter financial difficulties. Considering how difficult it is, I also want to concentrate on nutrition.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I so far have no complaints when it comes to the organization but rather I want applaud its generosity. This is because I was able to use the funds to build myself a home after staying homeless for so many years. My happiness is beyond comparison.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had plans of building a house for myself with the transfers because for over a decade now I have been sharing the same house with my stepson after mine collapsed. Therefore, I was really excited to receive this transfers and I proceeded to about KES 40,000 purchasing thirty four pieces of iron sheets and paying the mason. Afterwards I went on to spend the remaining balance on nutrition since it was a challenge.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home, I remember it was around 9 am when I was preparing breakfast for my family. I heard a message notification on my mobile phone an indication that I had a new message. I called my helper to verify and interpret it for me since I am uneducated. She informed me that I had received my transfer. It was the best moment of my life since I had not owned such a huge amount of cash before. I was very sure that I would be able to achieve my long-term goal of owning a piece of land.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a piece of land that I currently call mine is the biggest difference in my daily life. For so many years, I have not been able to own land for my family. This has always been frustrating since I had nothing to leave behind to my child as an inheritance and land was one of the perfect gifts a parent can give to their children. Currently, I am living a happy life after accomplishing my ambition and I attribute all this achievement to GiveDirectly transfer something that I am grateful for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For many years, I have desired to own a piece of land that I will call my own and be able to set up a home. This is because the place where we are staying at the moment, did not belong to us and I lacked the freedom over it. I spent KES 25,000 of my transfer to purchase a half an acre piece of land for my family of 2 members this is a great treasure for us. I also used KES 3000 to acquire food for my family since we are experiencing food scarcity in our area at the moment because of the prolonged drought conditions. I am planning to use the remaining amount to clear the piece of land and construct a new house that we will relocate to.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I want to use the first transfer which is 55000 to build myself a semi permanent 2 bedroom house, and buy myself beddings and buy chairs for my visitors. I have a son who completed his studies in 2020 and has been struggling to get college fees, so I will use the next transfer which is 55000 to enrol him to do any vocational course. Am grateful that this transfer came in at the right time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
At the beginning of the year, I have been unwell and been in and out of hospital. Recently i and my family Waking up in good health is something I don't take for granted, and I just hope that this year brings more grace and good health.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As at now I'm living in my sons home since I separated with my husband in 2019 and I don't even have a house. Most of the times during the weekends when my son comes from work, he has to put up in a friend's house, to enable me sleep here. This I find it very embarrassing to me.so when I receive my transfer this is my first plan to build myself a good house, where I can even host my visitors and my grandchildren.
