How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to buy new furniture, that is, sofa sets and beds for our house. We managed to build another house with the transfers from GiveDirectly. We constructed a permanent house and thus we would like to have new furniture that fits with the house. The ones that we have are few and they have grown old. We also have a goal to buy a cow. We want to buy one because we usually incur the cost of buying milk where we usually buy 2 liters daily at an average cost of KES 35 per liter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is fair in their enrollment. They are not biased and they do not accept bribery for them to enroll anyone into their program. There is, however, something that I would like them to change. Some people were left out yet they are residents of a village and they genuinely deserved to be helped. I believe that if they manage to change this then everything will be much better and great.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent the entire recent transfer on cementing the floor of the house that we had started building with the first transfer. I decided to demolish the house that I used to live in and construct another one because the timber that I had used to build the house 10 years ago, had grown old and hence the house was no longer stable and proportional. I had thought of just doing some repairs on the house, and cementing the floor, but on seeing how bad the situation was, I decided to change my mind and I started the construction of another one. I am glad that the house is now complete and we have moved into it. This would not have been possible if it was not for the transfers from GiveDirectly. We do not have stable sources of income. I usually do casual work of sawmilling while my wife is a small-scale subsistence farmer. The money that I get most of it usually goes to the school fee payment of my three children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
After enrollment into the project, only one goal was in my mind just as it was in my other family members' minds as well. We had agreed on erecting a new house that had to be spacious and stronger than the current one that we are living in with the other four members of my family. The message notification I received that morning was a confirmation of the start of this project that we had been dreaming of. With the money in my account, I decided to pay for most of the items I needed through the pay bill and withdrew only KES22000 in the next morning that I used in paying labor charges and other locally acquired materials.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the initiation of the construction work that is currently showing great progress. The idea that my family had been having over a long time is finally coming to pass after engaging all the support we got on the same. Just like any other member of my household, I am grateful to GiveDirectly and looking forward to the completion of the house once I receive the second transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With all the first transfer, I was able to assemble all the construction materials right from the 46 iron sheets, timber, nails, and other construction materials that have been useful in the construction of my new house that is currently ongoing. I am glad that we are finally constructing a spacious structure that can accommodate my family of five. With the chainsaw that I have been using in my daily chores, I found it easier to use timber on the walls since I could not incur the whole cost of obtaining timber with the trees in my compound and the chainsaw at hand. I also paid the labor charges on the construction, and now looking forward to the last transfer that will be useful in the completion of the floors, painting, placement of the ceiling board that I am yet to obtain, and also completion of payment of the labor charges once the construction is done.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I built my house in 2011 but I did not complete it due to lack of money however I have been using it that way. Termites have destroyed part of the house and it needs to be repaired. So when I get this transfer I would like to rebuild it. This will cost approximately KES 50000. I have a power saw and it will help me in timber cutting thus reducing expenses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is mostly after my daily work of timber cutting. It makes me happy knowing I earned something to feed my family. My day is usually spent looking for this timber business and it's strenuous, so I take the afternoon to rest too.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been a lack of money. I have a power saw which I use to cut timbers when need be. Numerous people also do the same job thus very competitive. So getting the job is a challenge. I have a family who also depend on me and sometimes it is a challenge meeting their basic needs.
