How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before receiving the first transfer, I had a lot of ideas that I wished to accomplish. After sitting down with my family to plan, I had to remove other goals from my list since the transfer could only accomplish part. Among the sidelined goals was to buy a piece of land which I have now activated and working hard on the small business. I started to ensure that I raise enough savings to fund it. I am a single mother living with my three children in my mother's land. The land is so small and constructing a permanent structure warrants more space that can only be possible when I buy land.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly gave us unmatched support and I am always grateful that many households in the village were transformed from the hard life they were living to a better one at the moment. The freedom to choose how to spend the money was a wise thought from GiveDirectly since our struggles differ and everyone had to address the immediate challenges within their households. Everything was carried out in an organized way and as promised during enrollment. I have nothing to complain about but am forever thankful for the generous support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfer was instrumental in boosting my livestock farming. For a long time, I had been buying milk for my family of four which was very expensive to manage by myself. Even though the burden reduced when I bought a dairy cow with part of the first transfer, I still had to add another one at KES 28000 from the second transfer. I am relieved that I am no longer buying milk but selling the surplus to my neighbors. I spent KES 10000 on opening a secondhand clothes-selling business that has so far been doing well. I had been buying in bulk and selling them in pieces from one market to the other. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on buying new pairs of clothes for my three children and also foodstuff for my household. My children were filled with joy when they see the changes in our household and we are all thankful for the generous support from GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm I was doing my chores at home. When I was done I decided to check my phone, Little did I know there was a message from GiveDirectly. The message confirmed that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. My family members celebrated with a lot of joy. It was one of the happiest days of our lives. I went to withdraw part of the money to purchase some food and household items that we were lacking. I withdraw the rest later and purchased a dairy cow. This was the priority since I used to buy milk daily. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Purchasing a dairy cow for KES 35,000 is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I used to purchase milk daily and it is so costly for me. I depend on small-scale farming and small business selling potatoes. This has been my main source of income, The money that I get through this is so small and I was not in a position to save some money. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money to purchase it. When I was enrolled in the program I knew I would be in a position to own a dairy cow. Currently, I get enough milk for the family and I have cut the daily cost that I used to incur. This has given me hope and enabled me to save some money that I could have used to buy the milk. My children do not miss milk like before, GiveDirectly has brought happiness into our home. I am so grateful for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is to enable me to cut the daily cost of purchasing very expensive milk. I am so grateful because I have enough milk for my children. I deposited KES 2,500 and purchased a D-Light on hire purchase subject to weekly installments of KES 140 per week. My children can do their assignments well since we have good lighting in the house. I spent KES 10,000 on adding stock to my business of selling potatoes. This had been my main source of income. I am so happy since I can meet the demand of my clients. I get good profits and this has given me hope to make it the best. I paid school fees for my children in primary school and purchased school uniforms. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and clothes for my children. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am doing a small business selling potatoes in the nearby market. It has been my ambition to expand it to increase my income which will enable me to purchase land since I live on family land. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 20000 as my capital for purchasing second-hand clothes for resale. This business will enable me to generate a good income since I have experience selling clothes from my previous job.
What is the happiest part of your day?
World Vision is an NGO working in our area and one month ago they invited all the youths from our area for a seminar on reduction of Female genital mutilation and they gave us KES 2000 after the training. This money boosted my business as I was on the verge of closing down. This brought joy and happiness into my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently, we are experiencing inflation of food items and yet this is my source of income as a vendor. Most of my customers purchase food items on credit and some do not pay after. This has brought me losses in my business and I am worried that I might be forced to close down if the situation will not change.
