How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Food insecurity has been so biting ever since the outbreak of lethal maize necrosis disease. It is a problem that has persisted for long that when the cost of living went up we could hardly afford to put food on the table. To boost our household food security and be self-sufficient we intend to increase the acreage of food production and diversify the crops that we will plant.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
They gave us all the support and the way they assisted and handled us was exceptional. They had our best interest at heart, they talked to us nicely, they are good people, and everyone in the village still talks good deeds about Givedirectly. We wish that giving directly could give us support more often rather than just coming once since we have a lot of aspirations to achieve. They should always walk with us on the journey of coming out from the jaws of poverty that has caused us a lot of suffering and misery.

The transfers came as a blessing to our family. We were going through a tough season where the cost of living had gone up and threatened our existence. We never had milk for household consumption and so the idea of purchasing a dairy cow had crossed our minds only that we didn't have the means. GiveDirectly transfers were a big enabler, we used the money to purchase a dairy cow. We were in dire need to have a cow for milk production and for posterity so that we could remember GiveDirectly with it in the future. We purchased a cow worth KES 30000 and the rest of the money to buy clothing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home busy with the house chores when I overheard my children saying that they had received the promised transfer. I immediately reached out to wear my phone was and asked them to check out if I had also received the money. On checking, I realised that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. This was the happiest day of my life. I then embarked on planning how I would use my transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to fence my family land with the unconditional transfer. I was unable to realise the goal due to financial constraints, I now feel safe and comfortable that I was able to achieve my dream in a short period. My life has been transformed into a better one, I am so thankful for the support that uplifted our lives amazingly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I thought of investing it in fencing my land. This is because I wanted to feel safe and also avoid outsiders passing through my land. Thus I used KES 16,000, I then used KES 2800 in buying a big water container. In addition to that, I bought a sofa set and bedding. I was unable to achieve the above due to an unreliable source of income. I am grateful for the support that changed my living standards in a short time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Paddocking my farm is the biggest opportunity that I can get with this money. I will have controlled grazing, leading to having sufficient use of my farm to feed the livestock. It will also reduce the intesity of having to tend to cows all the time, allowing me more time to till for crops. I will spend about KES 20,000 to achieve this. My farm will be more productive.I will also mprove my home with new beddings and furniture, at about KES 20,000.I will also buy a water tank and buy a heifer.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My source of joy for the last Six months has been getting money for food stuffs from selling poultry eggs.I have been rearing chicken which gives me about KES 200 per day from their eggs. I have not lacked to meet my daily needs in this house for that Period.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is my biggest challenge. Poor crops performance , and insufficient fodder for my cows have made it hard for me to get foodstuffs here.I need to utilize the land in a better way to increase my harvests, especially of maize and beans.
