How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I had was purchasing a heifer. This is because I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. I depend on small-scale farming and this is majorly for consumption beside that I run a small retail shop business but the money that I get through this is so small and I was not in a position to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I have a heifer and I know when it reproduces in the next few months I will get enough milk for my family and cut the daily cost of buying milk.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by enrolling all the people in the community and giving them the money to improve their living standards. Most people have to build a better house and paid school fees for their children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well in our community. We are all happy about the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25,000 on purchasing a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly since I do not have a continuous source of income. Purchasing a heifer has given me hope since when it reproduces in the next few months I will get enough milk for the family. I spent KES 10,000 on completing the construction of the house that I had started building. I am so grateful because now I live in a better and more spacious house. For the remaining amount of money, I added the stock to my business of retail business. currently, I am in a position to meet the demands of my clients and I am so happy.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It is a norm for me each morning to take my phone and check if there are any messages for me or even missed phone calls. That day was no different as I woke up and checked my phone. To my surprise, I had received a sum of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and i shared the good news with my wife who was equally very happy. I knew my dream o fg opening up my own business was finally going to be achieved and this excited me a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the indeoenpendence that I now enjoy having started a business of my own. Not only do I make more income from it but I feel so much relaxed and motivated working for myself I for myself. I look forward to expanding my business to say making an average of KES 500 per day in the next one months. Right now I make up to KES 300 Per day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 30000 to buy a second hand motorcycle and used another KES 15000 to buy stock for my new business. The remaining amount of KES 10000 was used to buy food and clothes for my family. We are a young family who are expecting our first child soon and I initially worked as a casual for a neighbour who owned a shop within our village. He paid me KES 5000 per month and this to me was very little money to help sustain my family. I had an idea of starting my own business and when I received money from GiveDirectly, I did not take long before I could decide on that of supplying tea leaves within the town. The motorcycle that I bought was to help me in quick and faster supply and I am happy that I now make an average of KES 300nas profit per day. Our living standards as a family has been greatly improved and we are so optimistic that the business will grow and enable us to have even better living standards in future. I personally feel so much indebted to God and to GiveDirectly for their support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I can start a small business to become self-employed. I earn about KES 150 per day, as a store attendant as compared to what I can earn if I start supplying tea leaves to shops around this area. I will use about KES 50,000 on this. I will also spend about KES 50,000 to educate my wife in a college, to do a lab technology course. to She will get a job and secure income for my family which is more stable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last 6 months, I am happy that my wife can join a college near home. This has been brought about by opening of several technical training institutions close to home. They are affordable and many including me, with meagre income can manage to pay for it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is providing for my family because what I earn is not enough. I make about KES 5000 per month. Constant daily income from my business would make sure we never suffer hunger again!
