How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I sat for my K.C.S.E in 2014 . My goal next year is to go to college and pursue a certificate course in plumbing . I chose plumbing because I have a friend who is a plumber and he is doing so well in life that he inspires me . I need $400 to complete the course and I'm saving from my salary towards this good course .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly is helping a lot of people during these difficult economic times . That is the main thing that you should continue doing . We need people like you to lift others up emotionally and financially. Just continue to help others , never get tired of doing this . I see nothing to improve on because you are already perfect .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm a casual labourer and the sole provider of my family because my wife is jobless, even my pay is not enough to provide basic needs for my family. The day I received this money, I was at work and I was so happy to see the Mpesa message . I used $11 to buy flour and $1 for vegetables. Previously , we used to share one toilet by two house holds , it was uncomfortable . So used $26 to build my own toilet , thanks to Give Directly , we no longer queue at the toilet door . I had always wished to venture in poultry farming , so I bought three hens at $21 . I chose poultry because it is profitable , mine have already reproduced and I've already sold two hens ! The floor of my house was so dusty with a lot of potholes , I bought six bags of cement a$42 and paid $45 for labour . Just like that and my floor looks new right now ! Unfortunately , my grandmother passed on just at that time and I spend all my remaining balance on her funeral expenses and food . I'm still grateful because this transfer lessened the burial financial burden .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I receivwd my transfer, I was so happy. It was late in the evening at around 6pm and I was on my way home from the shop. That day I had been so much engaged hence I realized about the transfer when I checked on my phone 2 hrs after the transfer had been sent. With no hesitation, I informed my wife who was more overjoyed to receive the same good news. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the financial support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since I received my transfer, the biggest difference in my life is having gone to my wife's maternal home. This has earned me honor and respect. Currently, I have a good relation with my in-laws, what had not been experienced in the past. Having cash at my disposal, I have also been able to comfortably acquire food for my family. Thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I got married, I had never visited my in-laws. When I received my transfer, I prioritize to spend KES 20,000 to make that viisitation. I was more happy to have known my in-laws. This has earned me some honour in the family. In addition, I spent KES 10,000 to buy food for my family. Lastly, I saved KES 15,000 to help me meet the educational need of my school going children. This will save me from the burden of raising fees when the new term begins in the next month.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
After high school, I could not collect my result slips and certificates. I had fee arrears of KES 12,000. I intend to settle it so that I can pick my documents. I have always wanted to take up a plumbing course. I will use some of these transfers to go through college. It's quite marketable.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The birth of my daughter. For a long time, I had desired to start my own family. When I got a wife, my life changed for good. I enjoy the companionship and to top it all up, we were blessed with a beautiful baby. Her name is Precious Pendo.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The wages I get from casual jobs cannot sustain my family. I can only afford to buy food. My child has been unwell. We treat her at home but she needs medical attention. I cannot afford it and that tears my heart apart.
