How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to start a small kiosk business where I will be selling foodstuffs in the village. With the famine that we have been facing for almost 3 years, I will have a ready market for the food products. The profit from this job will help me to start another project. Currently, I am vending firewood around the village which is a very laborious job and has very low. Starting the shop business will ensure that I own an alternative source of living for the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending directly money to the poor households in society. It was of great help to us since we were able to achieve a lot with the transfer. I am very grateful for the transfer for uplifting our lives. I do not see anything that it does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 of the recent transfer together with my personal saving to purchase a brand new motorbike for my husband. He is in the motorbike taxi business and had not been able to own one for himself since we lacked the finances. For over a year, he was using a neighbor's motorbike for the taxi which require him to pay KES 1800 per week. The income he could get was KES 200 per day which was not enough to sustain the needs of our family of 5 as well as pay for the educational needs of the 3 children. Currently, we are happy that he can get at least KES 500 per day which can comfortably meet most of our needs like food and no longer go to bed hungry. Also, I used KES 6400 to start livestock rearing by purchasing two goats as a future investment for the family. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was heading to the bush to fetch firewood when my mobile phone started ringing continuously. I knew that was a new message. Without wasting time or hesitating, I decided to check where the text was coming from. I was so happy to learn that it was from GiveDirectly altering me that I had received my first cash transfer. Due to the excitement that I had, I decided to go back home and share the news with my family. We later prayed and praised God for this fortune.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life ever since I started receiving the cash transfer is that I now have a motorbike. It has been my prayer to own it for so many years but I could not afford it because it was too costly. I purposely bought it for my spouse who has been jobless for quite some time. We have therefore been depending on the farming activities for our daily upkeep. It has never been that easy fending for our children. Most of the time, they could be sent home due to school fees arrears, also getting basic needs like food was sometimes difficult. I am so grateful that ever since we acquired the motorbike, life has been so smooth. We have been making good money which is sufficient for our basic needs and saves a portion for any emergency that may occur. I am even planning to start a hotel business in the village which will be an additional income. Through the two businesses, I trust that we will no longer have to struggle like before courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a fraction of my first cash transfer on buying a bed at KES 6700 and two mattresses at a total of KES 7400. These were to replace the old rags that we have been using as beddings for all those years. I could always wake up with lots of fatigue and pains every morning. To add to that I bought two goats that I am currently keeping on my homestead. I settled for them because they reproduce and mature very first which is an assurance that they will increase in number within a short period. Also, I had to purchase a motorbike and I am so thankful that through it I now earn an income. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuff and cleared fees for my three children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of five members. I am a casual laborer and my husband is a motorcyclist. The family income is approximately KES 12000 per month. My husband uses another person's motorbike for work. He pays KES 500 per day to the owner. I will use KES 90000 to buy a new motorcycle for my husband. This will ensure a daily family income of KES 500 per day. I will also use KES 20000 to buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband works as a motorcyclist. Last year 2021 he did not have a motorbike to work with. In January 2022, he got a motorbike from his friend. He is now working full time and provides food for the family. His job brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on agriculture for my family's food. It is two years now without having rain in our village. This has caused drought and famine. As a family, we take one meal per day to cut costs. This has made my last born to grow weak. Lack of food is the challenge I am facing in my life.
