How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My hope is to buy a 2 acre piece of land for my children . It costs $1200 and I have only paid $150 .I'm so worried because the owner is on my neck for me to complete it's payment . I had even wanted to sell my cow to pay for it but the amount is way too little to make a difference . I have to clear school fees balance for my children and that is what I'm concentrating on right now . I really do not know how I will pay this debt , I even regret why I started paying for that land .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has helped people in this village : People were suffering so much . Children were not going to school because of school fees balances . People didn't have decent houses . But you came and made all that possible. You gave us free money and we used it according to our needs. You even brought peace in this village because people who owed others were able to repay them . People have been able to build decent houses using your money . The only thing you can improve is to please be sending your messages to us in Kiswahili , I cannot understand English ,so when you send in Kiswahili , I'll be able to understand . Otherwise , I always pray for you . Thank you so much .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I do not have a stable source of income . I used to sell small tilapias and groceries but my husband stopped me from doing it .Nowadays I just do subsistence farming , I also dig for people at a small fees when need arises . My husband is a butcher in Mombasa town . We both struggle to fend for our family . I used $370 to pay school fees for my son who is in secondary school and $30 for my 4 children who are in primary school . I spent $18 on 1 bale of maize flour because there was no food in my house . My thatched roof kitchen had already collapsed and I had no where to cook from . So I bought 10 iron sheets worth $75 and 4kgs of nails worth $12 . I topped up the balance and paid labour for my new kitchen to be constructed . Without this transfer , I couldn't have done all these , maybe I could even be cooking from outside .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left my phone to charge while working on my farm. A neighbour came to me and asked whether I had received money from GiveDirectly. I sent my son to check the phone and whether there was such a message on the phone. I was amused when I found out the transfer had been sent and I was not aware of it. I felt happy and planned for the transfer and prepared a nice meal that evening to celebrate with my family first.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am from a polygamous family and it has been a challenge for my husband to provide for both families. I have five children all in school and raising their fees has been really grinding, thanks to the few goats that I sold to pay for their fees before GiveDirectly came. I sometimes failed to pay for them on time and they were therefore chased from school. I thank GiveDirectly because ever since I received the transfer, I paid for them on time and were allowed to go on with their studies without interruptions on fees. My goal is to ensure that they get a good education that will build them a better future despite the challenges.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had purchased a piece of land which I am planning to do farming and also build a home. Our ancestral land may not be enough for us since we are a polygamous family. I had not finished paying for it since the little earnings from menial jobs went to school fees and household needs. When I received my first transfer, I spent Ksh, 15000 and paid for the piece of land. In addition to this, I also spent Ksh. 25000 on paying fees for my children and also did shopping for them on stationeries. I have one who is in high school and five are in primary school. I have been keeping livestock and selling them to take care of their educational needs. I do not own any livestock as of now and at times I failed to pay on time. I am glad that through the transfer, they are now comfortably in school. My aim is to see them advance in their studies and help them realize their educational goals. I spent the remaining amount on buying foodstuffs for my family and other essential household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm the first wife in a polygamous marriage with six children. My co-wife who is the second one has been causing a lot of problems. She's always seeing life in a dichotomy which makes her struggle so much to pull me down so that she can rise above me. She has also turned my husband against me and my family. In every instance of her drama, my husband normally tries to humiliate me in full view of everyone so as to please her. I'm tired of this and I feel it's this money that would take me off the shackles. When I get it I will buy a piece of land that I can afford so that I resettle my family far from all that.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It's quite fulfilling to be able to progress economically when you just started from scratch. I started off by raring chicken which multiplied, then I sold them all to buy goats. At some points I was also able to sell the goats and buy cows. I now have four cows that I'm hiding from my husband by keeping them at my maternal home. I felt when recently when my son was joining high school because without the help of my husband I was able to sell two to raise the fees plus all the requirements.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I go through a very hard life over here with my husband and mother-in-law against me, always doing everything in their power to get me to give up and walk away. It's such a big challenge trying to create peace when people are expecting you to react with the same amount of hate. This is always weighing me down and killing my happiness most of the days. I just want to take my family and go live elsewhere away from them so that I can start over.
