How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a dream with is to own more goats on my homestead. I prefer rearing goats because they can thrive so well in my region moreover they reproduce twice a year. Therefore I am certain that once I will be able to achieve this goal, I will no longer strain especially in providing for my family's basic needs. This is because I can sell one or two goats and settle the matter.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing well in my entire village. Their coming has enhanced peace and unity in the village since that is what they emphasised and I am glad for this change. I do not see anything negative they did that needs to be changed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a few building materials like iron sheets and poles at $300. I purchased them purposely for the renovation of my house since it had a leaky old roof and weak walls. I was so worried that it would collapse anytime. During the rainy days, it was hectic because we could be rained on terribly and sometimes forced to squeeze into one corner of the house till the rains stop. It has been so tough and this equally affects my children healthwise. I now feel happy and enjoying my marriage for the first time courtesy of GiveDirectly. Later on, I bought a new mattress which was to replace the mats that I have been using for over twenty years. The pains that I have been going through are unexplainable. I am thankful to this organisation to come into my life at the time I needed them the most. With the remaining, I bought new uniforms as well as food for my six family members. Being in a polygamous marriage has never been easy because my spouse is old therefore on most days, we would go without food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4 pm when my daughter and I were still in the field cutting longs to prepare charcoal for sale. While struggling to finalize because time was gone, I received a message on my phone. Since I do not know how to read, I gave it to my little daughter who had accompanied me to check what it was. She jumped in happiness even before telling me what the message was all about. I became curious and asked her, and she informed me that the promised money from GiveDirectly had been sent to me. I was filled with joy and I felt energized. Instead of leaving for home as she suggested I completed the piece of work that I knew would be not easy to complete till the next day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can attest to is that before the transfer from GiveDirectly we used to sleep hungry for some days due to a lack of money to buy some food. As a widow, I have been struggling to fend for my children but at some point, my effort was bearing no fruits. Since the time we received the transfer, things changed for the better, and my family has an access to daily food even if it’s not the best I would like them to take but they are no longer sleeping hungry as before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the first thing was to pay KES 10000.00 for my form four child who was preparing for his final national examination. I did so to prevent him from being sent home for fees so that he could have ample revision time for the exams. I also bought some livestock for KES 17000.00. The aim of buying the livestock is to serve as an investment because they can be converted for money at any time need arises. Thereafter I bought 12 pieces of iron sheets for KES 11400.00 to renovate the roof of my house since it had old and worn-out iron sheets. As a small entrepreneur, I added the stock to my sardine business that I have and used the remaining amount for the family upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better future to my children since my desire has been to educate them to University. I have ever been worried of realizing this dream but with the arrival of Givedirectly in our village, I am optimistic about materializing my ambition. My plan once I receive this money is to spend KES 55000 to pay all school fees for my son who is in secondary school. This will give him the opportunity to settle in school and hence, a better performance. I will further spend KES 30000 to renovate my house and one more room so it can comfortably accommodate my family of 5. I am also planning to spend the remaining amount to buy 6 goats that will act as a long term investment project to my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month, my nephew blessed me with 42 kilograms of maize flour. I still have stock and we have not been skipping meals for the last 3 weeks. This brought joy in my life because I am now spending my income for other household expenses.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. I am unskilled person and getting a good job to sustain my family of five has been a great challenge to me. The only source of livelihood is charcoal vending a job that earns me KES 200 per day which I spend on food for my family.
