How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, my goal was to open a second hand clothes business for my wife which I'm looking forward to start in a few months time. Accomplishing this means that my will have something to do and she will be earning some income to support me with the family responsibilities. I will also be helping her fulfil her greatest wish of owning a business and quitting being a housewife.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is giving people money because they believe that people know what they want and understand their needs. This way, they have been able to empower so many people. Even though the transfers are unconditional, I would encourage the organization to be conducting financial literacy classes because given that you work with poor and some illiterate people, such classes would empower people to spend the money more wisely and on better ways.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a small young family(wife and children). Before I received the transfers, I couldn't invite guests at home because we were living in a single room and there was no an extra room for guests. With my first transfer, I managed to build some other two rooms which I spend $300 of my second transfer on roofing. Right now, I can invite guests to my home because I have enough space for them. I spend the balance to buy a dairy calf which I can't wait to watch it mature, give birth and earn me some income from selling milk. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for I wouldn't have been where I am today were it not for the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a few minutes to 7 am while still asleep when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, I confirmed to have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy knowing that some of my financial struggles had been reduced and I withdrew the money three days later.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Clearance of my University fees arrears which had accrued over the past four years is the biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers. As a result, I can now look for employment as I have obtained my original academic certificates.
Secondly, through the transfers, I have the heifer which once it reproduces will be a source of milk for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of one and have been relying on online writing to feed my family for the past two years. I have also been using it to repay my university fees arrears which accrued over the past four years. From the online writing, I normally get up to KES 25,000 a monthly part is used to feed my family, and the rest on school fees arrears and this has been quite a struggle.
When I received the transfers my priority was to buy a heifer. I, therefore, spent KES 24,000 on a heifer because I have been relying on my parent's dairy cow for a cup or two of milk. For me, this has not been enough to feed my family, especially my son who's still very young. But once the heifer reproduces I will have enough milk to feed my family.
Secondly, I used the KES 22,000 on clearance of my university fees arrears. As a result, I have now obtained my graduation certificate and university transcripts and can apply for job openings. This is contrary to earlier when I couldn't apply for jobs because interviews require one to have their original academic certificates.
Thirdly, I also spent KES 6,000 on the latest clothing fashion for my family. As a result, is happier than before and affection has increased in our marriage.
The rest I spent on food and household items. And this has helped reduce my household budget for the past month.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I plan to enroll my wife in college to take a hairdressing course and this will take a duration of 3months. The school fees is approximately KES 30,000. I feel that this will make her a financially independent lady because the skill will enable her to open her own salon. She will be happy because this is something that she loves and she has been yearning for. Receiving this money will enable my wife to finally join college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After losing my microfinance job at ASA international due to covid 19, I was able to train as an online writer where I secured an online job 5 months ago. This has enabled me to put food on the table for the family and this has brought joy to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest challenge at the moment is buying food for the family, I have been thinking of buying a dairy cow that will cost KES 40,000 to provide milk for the family. Having a small child, milk is vital because it is a good source of proteins.
