How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer as to how I had planned, I developed another goal that I desire to accomplish once I get some money. if I get the money, I aim to fix a water tap at home and become a vegetable grower. The water will aid me in irrigation for better growth of the veggies. Since drought hit our area, I am sure the vegetable business will do well because people need veggies on daily basis.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is a life uplifting organization that holds people’s hands from poverty to a state of self-dependence. On my side, my life had no defined direction since I did not have any source of income. But when I received the transfers I was able to start a business which is now my pillar and source of income for my family. If it were not for GiveDirectly, I would not have managed to start this kind of business, and also my children would be still sleeping on the floor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the second transfer, the first thing I settled was school fees for my five children. One of them is in secondary school while the other four are in primary school. Therefore, I paid KES 8000.00 for the secondary school child and KES 6000.00 for the primary school children. I made this the priority because my children were ever sent home for fees and this did not give me peace of mind knowing that they were losing so much in school. I also used KES 20000.00 to start a kiosk business where I sell fast-moving goods such as maize flour and other items that are used in homes on daily basis. The aim of starting the business was to have a source of income for my family. Thereafter, I bought two beds and two mattresses for y children. The reason for buying these items is because for a while my children have been sleeping on the floor hence saw it was prudent to buy the beds for them.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 o'clock I was on my farm harvesting maize for my family consumption. I heard a message ringtone on my phone and after checking I discovered that I had received my transfer. I was extremely happy for receiving my transfer. I left what I was doing to return home to inform the rest of my family members about the good news. On arriving home, I saw everyone in the area celebrating receiving their transfer. I thank GiveDirectly for its support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is I am living a better life after fulfilling my desire to boost my livestock rearing. I am optimistic that I will be able to produce more milk for sell which will increase my income hence being able to solve my daily needs easier.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 24,000 to purchase one local cow, one goat, and one sheep. I have desired to boost my livestock rearing since I had sold most of the animals to support my children's education. I also bought 10 iron sheets, nails and paying labor charges in total KES 15,000 for the construction of an additional room for my children. This is because the house that I had was very small and to fully accommodate my family of 7 members. In addition, I bought a new mattress for 5000 the one I had was old and worn-out. For the remaining amount, I supported my kid's education by paying their school fees. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing sufficient food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means starting a business. This has been my longing but due to financial challenges this dream has never come true. I am planning to spend 30,000 shillings start a food kiosk which will be a source of income to my family. In a day can make at least 500 shillings as profit which is enough to sustain all our needs. Approximately, we spend 300 shillings on food. Also, I will invest the remaining amount on my children education believing that they will pass and have a bright future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is my happiest part of the day. This is because I have enough time to climb and harvest alcohol from coconut trees. Unlike in the afternoon when It is very hot.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a good source of income is the biggest hardship I have faced in life. I work as an alcohol vendor, this job is tiresome because I have climb not less than 10 coconut trees and earns me 150 shillings in a day which is not enough to sustain all our needs such as food.
