How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, My new goal is to start a livestock business where I would buy and sell goats and cows, so that I may have a reliable source of income for my family. With the transfer that I received from the GiveDirectly, I was able to start livestock rearing. In addition, I was able to educate my 3 children who are still schooling by clearing their school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in coming up with the cash transfer program that targeted the less fortunate households in society. I was stranded since I did not have any source of income for my kids to commence their studies. I am grateful to the organization that had installed peace of mind in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 33,000 to purchase one local dairy cow. I am assured that I will be having a steady milk supply for my family. In addition, I will be able to sell extra litres of milk to earn a living. Furthermore, I am planning to use KES 15,000 to start a livestock business of buying and selling goats. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very grateful the moment I received the money because I had been going through a lot of psychological torture due to my children being sent home for school fees arrears while at the moment I hardly had any means or income to keep them in school. It almost seemed inevitable that they were going to drop out of school, and the fact that all three of them are girls, that used to give me sleepless nights. Therefore, I was very grateful when I received the money because that was the answer to the question of my daughters' education. All thanks to GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is definitely the fact that I am no longer worried about my daughters dropping out of school because of the inability to settle their school fees arrears. They are comfortably in school and with the goats that I will have, hopefully they will complete their studies and be independent and responsible ladies. I am so happy and grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on my three daughters education which cost a total of KES 23000 because not only do I believe and know that it is my responsibility to educate my children but also I want them to grow into responsible and independent ladies that will not be depending on anyone else for their upkeep or personal affairs. This will only be made possible by them getting a good education. However, I also believe that with their good education, I will also be able to count on them in the future because they won't forget about me and that they will always offer me the financial assistance I will need in the future. This makes me feel so happy and hopeful. I also kept aside KES 20000 to buy some goats depending on the price for one in the market because it rained and hopefully, it will continue so that livestock do not become much of a liability because without rainfall then owning livestock is a wasted opportunity and gives rise to more costs, especially having to buy them grass. Therefore, getting these goats will be an investment that is both long-term and sustainable because they will multiply and increase in numbers, and I will be able to sell one or two to address the challenges that I will be facing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Currently, I work as a charcoal vendor, but my longing has been to start a business ( buying livestock and selling) but due to financial struggles, this desire has never come to pass. Receiving this money means attaining it. I am aiming at spending KES 40,000 to purchase at least 15 from rural areas and sell them at a profit price in town. Approximately, I can make proceeds of KES 15,000 in a month which will be a good source of income for my family of 7 members. Other than that, I will spend the remaining amount to clear school fees for my child who is in college. Hoping that he will secure a good job and assist us in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last week, I received a grant food ( maize and beans ) from one of the politicians. This brought happiness to my life because it sustained the family for 5 days. It came at the right time as a blessing because, by the time I attained it, my family had nothing to put in my stomach.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The water problem is the biggest hardship I am currently experiencing. It has been 4 months now without rains and we do not have taps to depend on. Every day I have to travel for 3 hours so that I get water for the family and it is not clean. This has brought a lot of struggles because I do not have enough time to perform my tasks of burning charcoal and provide for my family's needs.
