How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I do not have any other new goals because the ones that were in mind, I was able to accomplish. Having the goats is all I had desired to have on my homestead. I settled for them because they reproduce twice a year which is an assurance that k will have many of them within a short period. I will be able to keep and sell some in case of any emergency.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving us enough teachings in regards to the Mpesa security. This enlightened most of us considering that a bigger fraction of us are illiterate. As a result, there were no cases of thefts or losses. I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a solar panel at KES 6000. For years I have been using candles which were relatively expensive and most of the days I couldn't afford them. The solar panel will be of help not only for the light at night but also for charging my phones. I later bought a new bed and a mattress at KES 10000. I have been using the traditional beds for so many years and it has been so tough since I always encounter back pains. To add to that I bought four goats at KES 14000. They will serve as the living assets that I will depend on in case of any financial difficulties. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff that would last for two months since I am a jobless widow.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Being unable to ululate outwardly, I decided to do the same inwardly. This happiness came as a result of the 1st transfer I received. It was at around 9am when I received a message in my phone. Upon checking, it was a transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the good access to food and nice shelter. Initially I used to sleep hungry for some time but since GiveDirectly sent us the first transfer, I have been accessing food well. The bed and the mattress mark another difference that I hadn’t thought of before. Sleeping comfortable was something I just hear from other people but as at now I am experiencing the comfort by myself, all this is the good work of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I bought a bed for KES 6500.00, a mattress for KES 4700.00, 3 goats and a solar lamp for KES 10000.00 and KES 6000.00 respectively. The main reasons for doing this is that, I had a very small traditional bed and I was to place some sacks on for me t sleep which was very painful. The paraffin bill has gone high and sometimes I would fail to access the paraffin due to shortage; thus decided to buy the solar lamp. I also gave some amount to my helper as an appreciation, and kept the rest for the family upkeep and any other emergence that could emerge.
