How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In order to supplement the income that my spouse provides, I intend to start both a grocery store and a used clothing business. I currently burn charcoal for sale, but due the effect of the smoke and the demanding work, my health keeps getting worse. I will set aside some money from it as it is the only source of income I now have in order to generate funding for the business. In a year, I intend to accomplish this. My husband will nit have to work too hard to support us since we shall have an additional source of income from the new venture. Since I will not be subjected to the harmful labor, my health will also improve.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving us unrestricted cash transfers, in my opinion, was a terrific idea because it allowed people to address a variety of requirements. I have noticed a significant improvement in our village as a result of the majority of students who had stopped attending school becoming enrolled again. While some people purchased cows, others made investments in businesses. The village is now better and more tranquil. On the other hand, everyone seems to be applauding the organization, therefore I have not heard of any concerns about it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the second transfer to purchase two cows worth $300 for rearing after successfully using the first transfer to pay for my children's secondary school expenses. We still have five kids in primary and secondary school, and we are hoping to sell some of them once the cows give birth to help pay for their tuition. Aside from that, milk will be beneficial to us because we can use it for household consumption and even sell the extra. My four primary school-aged children were frequently sent home because they owed the school $100 a year's tuition arrears. Thus, I utilized a portion of the transfer to pay the arrears and the remaining $130 to buy necessary food. The money was quite helpful because my primary breadwinner, my spouse, became unwell during that time, and if it weren't for the money, my kids would probably have quit school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was awakened by a loud vibration from my mobile phone at around 11 PM. I was even shocked becasue it was so rare for me to receive a call or a message from anyone. I had to ask my daughter who was still awake studying to check the contents of notifications. Upon checking she realized that the messages were from the Segovia Technology informing me that I had received my first transfer. I was overjoyed with happiness on receiving this great news. I couldnt afford to sleep again and I remember informing all my other family members concerning the money. They started celebrating and thanking God for the blessing. This will truly be our memorable night in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to purchase two dairy cows. These have brought a positive impact on my life considering the fact that they have numerous benefits as compared to the other domestic animals. I have however been dreaming of owning them for years but this was not achievable since they were very costly. I, therefore, settled for them because first, I will be getting some milk for free for my family consumption. Also, I am planning to sell the remaining liters to the local markets whereby a liter goes for KES 50. This business is normally profitable since there is a scarcity of milk in my region. This will be my major source of income since for now, I rely on unstable jobs to fend for my family ( six members). I will be saving the little money that I will be earning and pay school fees for my children once they graduate from secondary schools since it has been my main concern. In addition to that, I will also be able to take good care of my family from the sale of milk.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 25000 of my first transfer on buying livestock more so two dairy cows. These have been the well thoughtful living assets that I have a yearning to keep in my compound but I couldn't afford them because of the financial hardships that I have been undergoing. I also cleared school fees of KES 14 000 for my children, one in secondary and the other three in primary schools respectively. They have always been sent home severally and stay even for weeks becasue of the huge arrears. In addition, I bought new clothes for my children for the Christmas celebrations and all I could say that was a memorable one ever since they were born they have never had such a chance of putting in new attires. With the remaining cash, I bought foodtufs and other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a permanent house for my family. I have a family of six members and we are all living in a one bedroom house . It is not spacious for the family and it leaks during rains season. Upon receiving my money, I will build a two bedroom house at a cost of KES 80000. I will also use KES 30000 to pay school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school. She has a school fees balance of KES 40000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter who is in secondary school got a bursary cheque from county government Worthy KES 20000 on October 2021. This reduced her school fees balance from KES 60000 to KES 40000. The bursary brought happiness to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our village is faced with drought and famine currently. It is hard to fine clean water for the family. A 20 litre plastic of water goes at KES 50. Getting KES 50 per day is not easy because my husband and I are jobless. So drought is the challenge I am facing currently.
