How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the second transfer, I bought some chicken and I am looking forward to focus on poultry farming so that I can get some additional income to supplement my main income. With this money, I will be able to expand my businesses and pay my bills comfortably.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through GiveDirectly cash transfers, people have been able to build houses, buy domestic animals and investment in business. conclusively, we can say what GiveDirectly does well is giving unconditional cash transfers to people living in poverty
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Both my husband and I are in businesses of selling livestock and milk respectively. We therefore keep a large herd of livestock in our homestead. These livestock in turn require a very a lot of water and it's been a struggle getting the water from the river especially during the dry seasons. Although we have had plans to buy water tanks, we have not been able to meet this goal since because of our family demands like paying school fees for our children. With the second transfer that I received from GiveDirectly, I spend $300 to buy a 5000 litres water tank. Since it's rainy season, I have harvested water and it will be very helpful during the next dry season. I spend the balance to buy chicken since I was planning to start a poultry farming.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was filled with happiness when I received a message from GiveDirectly that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer. It was around 6:00 PM when I got the notification and could not collect the money immediately, but visited the shopping center the following morning. At that moment, I was alone at home and had to inform my husband, who was out at the village meeting. He was equally excited by the news and promised to come home before late.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the accomplishments that have improved my family's living standard. The receipt of the transfer has brought great transformation within a short time. We just moved into a new house, well lit with the newly connected electricity, and also have a new piece of furniture. All these would not have been possible without the support from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had a lot on my plate when I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly; on top of our list was to complete the ongoing construction of our main house. I needed more timber and soft boards for the ceiling and also cleared the labor charges that summed up to KES 22000. In addition, I needed to add chairs to the living room and had to spend KES 4200 at the local carpentry shop. We also paid for the connection of the electricity at KES 10000 after a long spell of buying kerosene and using candles when we could not afford the fuel. Our home is well lit at the moment and my children can comfortably study every evening after school. I spent part of the remaining on settling the school fees for my three primary kids who needed KES 2000, obtained enough foodstuff for my family of five worth KES 10600, and used the remaining amount for other household goods that we were missing. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that has brought a lot of transformation to my household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have an ongoing project of building my main house. It is halfway complete and I run short of money averaging KES 30000. It will be of pleasure to me if I complete it within a period of three months to enable my children get access to an ample study room. If I become lucky to receive the transfer, I will channel the remaining amount to increase and grow my poultry farming.
What is the happiest part of your day?
This year's farm produce was satisfactory since we never had enough rainfall. I was glad to harvest 6 bags of maize compared to previous season where I had no harvests.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Recently I and my husband started domestic animals brokery business with a size of 6 animals (goats and sheeps) a day. This number is too low compared to the current market demand. It makes me much uncomfortable when I fail to satisfy my customers. I could wish to increase the number of animals to atleast 10 a day to meet the demand and increase my daily profits.
