Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the farm busy weeding when I heard my phone ringing in my pocket. I stopped to check what it was all about and I could not believe it when I saw that it was an SMS saying that I had received the transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was filled with so much joy on seeing this since I knew that the problems we had were going to reduce. I finished what I was doing and I went back home. Soon after my husband who had gone to the shops arrived. He had heard people saying that the transfers had been sent and he asked me if this was true. I confirmed to him the good news and he was so happy on hearing this too. We celebrated together and we gave thanks to God and GiveDirectly for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. We were able to clear the school fee balances for our three children who are in secondary school. We were hence able to have some peace of mind because we were no longer worried about where to get the money to do so. The children were hence able to study well without being sent home all through the second term of the year. With having cleared the school fee, I was able to save up some of the money from the vegetable vending business and I bought a few chickens. I was also able to save up some money in the self-help groups that I have joined. I plan to use the money that I will get from the merry-go-round contributions on buying a goat. This goat is going to be of great help to us in future since I can sell some of its offsprings and use the money on paying school fees for the children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the transfer money on clearing the school fees balance for our three children. The three children are in secondary school and we were still owing the school's KES 40000. We depend on farming to earn a living and I have a small business of vending vegetables. The little money that we get from these income-earning activities most usually goes to the payment of school fees. We usually pay little by little and hence we still owed the school a lot of money. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly because they enabled us to clear the school fee balances for second term. The children were hence able to study well without any interruption of being sent home due to school fees balances.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a small business operating a posho mill but in the last 6 months, it has not been functioning because it broke down. In this business, I was getting KES 400 profit per day which could enable me to feed my family. So when I get this money I plan to repair it. This will cost around KES 20000. Since the time it broke down life has not been the same I had to depend on farming of which is not reliable due to constant drought. With the pressure of children in different schools needing school fees life has been difficult.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I get to enjoy dinner with my family. Most of the day I spend in the kiosk. So when I come back in the evening I reunite with my family as we share the day's experience.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been a lack of food. Farming has been a challenge due to draught. Even the small business I used to depend on came to a stand when it broke down. I tried starting another kiosk business but it does not give much profit. I earn KES 200 per day.
