How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer because I am now a proud owner of a dairy cow. It just calved two days ago and I am glad that very soon, my family will have enough milk for our consumption and for sale. I will be using this income to pay for our daily bills. Also, having some goats are assets to me that I can rely on incase of an emergency since finding a buyer to buy one is easier. As a Kalenjin, apart from the pride one derives from owning some livestock, it is an assurance to me that I will be able to see my children through their education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by helping everyone in the village financially and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 10000 from my transfer to finish paying for a water tank that I had bought it using my first transfers. Also, I used KES 20000 to buy some goats for rearing. I have a section of my land where it is unproductive since it is full of murram and bushes hence not suitable for farming. These goats will enable me to utilize this part of land and they are also assets to me that I can depend on in case of an emergency. In addition to these, I spent KES 10000 to pay school fees for my son who had been sent back home to collect fee arrears. Using the remaining amount, I bought some clothes for my family and food to last us for some time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around six thirty four while still asleep when I heard a message ring but ignored and kept on sleeping. It was only after receiving a call from a neighbor asking whether I had received the money that I checked my SMS and confirmed to have received it. I was very excited, immediately woke up and relayed the news to my kids and they were all excited. While going to MoMo agent I was very cautious because there are many conmen in our place.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is ability to provide for my family hence relieving my husband of financial distress. This is because we normally depend on him for everything. Sometimes when in lack, I used buy goods on credit hence increasing his financial burden and this would bother him so much. I am also happy because I have my own my dairy cow which has relieved me of buying a liter of milk per day which were quite costly. At times, I would buy milk only to find out that's spoilt and that would really break my heart. I am also grateful to GD because I have been able family's basic needs and theres tranquility in my home.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on a dairy cow after loosing all my two dairy cows to skin diseases two years ago. Part of the transfer was spent on a 3000-litres water tank because rivers in our place are quite far and the water is contaminated therefore unhygienic for consumption. The rivers are also seasonal because of prolonged dry spells and at times you have to hire motorcycle to transport water from a far. I also bought a three seater sofaset, and the rest I spent on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been aspiring to own a dairy cow and help improve the health of my children. If I will be lucky to get the transfer from Give Directly, I will use Kenya shillings 30,000 to buy a dairy and the remaining will use it to pay School fees for my 3 children. I will use the milk for home consumption and sell the surplus in the nearby shopping centre. This will enable me earn extra income to improve my household and meet other essential household expenditures.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since we entirely depend on farming for upkeep, I spend almost the whole day working in my 1 acre piece of land where I have grown maize, beans, kales, among others. Going back home in the evening with some food for my family is the joy of my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to poor climatic condition in our area, we have been unable to harvest enough maize in my 1 acre piece of land. Initially, we relied on it to cater for education expenses for my 3 children but this changed 10 years ago due to unfavourable climatic condition . This has forced my husband to look for an alternative source of income as a security guard in the city. Even though my husband earns Kenya shillings 12,000, it is hardly enough to cater for the entire family. Getting a reliable source of income has been the biggest hardship we have faced in life.
