How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm planning to invest more on my dairy farming through buying more supplement for my cows so that they can improve their milk production from 10 litres per day to 20 litres. Accomplishing this means that I will be earning more income and I will be able to cater for all basic needs for my family without relying on my husband.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is enrolling each and every household in the village irregardless of their social status. This reduces risks of theft and community conflict. On what you need to improve on, you should include the old and unproductive members of the community in a longer sustainable programs so that they can be able to cater for basic needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend $450 to buy a 5000 litres water tanks because for the longest time during during the dry seasons, we have had to take our dairy cows to the river which is more than four kilometers from home. This of course reduces their milk production and therefore loses. When I got my second transfer, I thought it was a good idea for me to buy water tanks so that I will be able to harvest enough water for the cows during the dry seasons. I spend the balance to pay school fees balance for my two children who are in high school which we were not able to pay previously due to the prevailing harsh economic times.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had taken my supper, it was around 9 Pm when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I had received some money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and grateful and I immediately called my spouse to inform him. When he heard that GiveDirectly had sent the transfer he was so happy as well. The next day we planned on how to spend the money and I went to withdraw the money. We are grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being in a position to purchase the best breed of a dairy cow is the biggest difference in my daily life. This was one of our priorities. We have always wanted to invest in diary-keeping projects and are always the best breed. This was our chance to do it, We purchased a dairy cow that was worth KES 100,000 we had deposited KES 50,000 on the first transfer. We are so grateful because we now own it. I am a teacher by profession and I get a salary every month. Due to the recurrent basic household needs and school fees for our children we were not in a position to save some money to buy this breed. Currently, we have enough milk for the family and sell the extra milk to earn an income daily. I save the money with the hope of purchasing another dairy cow in the future. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has fulfilled our wishes. We loved dairy keeping and we will improve this and make it our main source of income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I deposited KES 50,000 for the first transfer for a dairy cow and the actual cost was KES 100,000. I spend KES 50,000 on the second transfer to pay the outstanding balance. This was one of the best breeds that I had always wanted to own. I am so grateful because I get enough milk for the family and I sell the extra milk to earn an income to pay school fees for my children in various schools. I spent the remaining amount of money on housing basic needs and food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I grew up in families of farmers. I have learned a lot and developed a passion for farming given that it saw me throughout my life. Depending on salary alone is never save given that anything can happen. I have developed dairy farming to enhance my farming and so far I am enjoying the venture. I sell about 20 litres a day earning approximately KES 700. This has made my life easier. I always look forward to expanding it and this is why I see my cash transfer as an achieved goal. I am planning to use the entire transfer to buy a pure breed heifer to add to my herd. This is an added asset to us and with time I will have more milk for sale. I am hopeful this will caters to my children's school fees and support other household needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I cherish my family and I always do what I can to make it peaceful and harmonious for us all. I talk to my children to embrace good virtues in life knowing that will be the answer to my prayers. In the last six months, my greatest joy has been the joy, love peace and harmony we have had at home.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Even though my husband and I are permanently employed, financial constrain are my major challenge. I have three children who are in school and they have to get their fees. Even after I got married, I am still depended on by my siblings. This strain my income a lot thus making a move to invest is secondary for me.
