How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Previously, I had begun building some rental houses at the nearby center, unfortunately that project stalled. At the enrollment time in GD progam, I had a goal of completing that rental building. I knew that when it would be over, I would be able to get some tenants thus I would be in a position to get additional income. Since rental project is still on progress, I have not yet developed any new goal. However, I have resolved to rather focus on my first goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in giving unconditional cash to the members of the community where it works. As a result of this, there are a remarkable positive change in the lives of the recipients who have benefited from GD's program. In addition, GiveDirectly does well in paying direct visits to all the potential recipients, a situation that enables them to enroll genuine households in the program. I have not so far observed what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a total 50,000 KES from my most recent transfer to continue building the rental house in my nearby center. I decided to focus on it because it is a project from which I shall be able to earn an additional source of income. When it is completed, I shall be raising a rent of 8,000 KES from it on a monthly basis. Consequently, in addition to my other earnings, I shall be able to comfortably support my family of 10 despite being advanced in age.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At the time when the money was sent, I did not have my phone with me. My children had gone to withdraw some money from my account so that they could purchase some food for our dinner. At that time, I was seated with my mother-in-law when she told she had received some message and asked me to help her read. It was a confirmation message that she had received money from Give Directly. We were both happy and celebrated. I could not wait for my children to bring back my phone.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have the hopes that I will soon complete constructing the rental house that was left pending after my spouse lost his job. The moment they will be done we shall earn a good income from them which will enable us to comfortably meet our household's needs. This is the biggest difference in my daily life because at the moment we are really struggling to cater for our family's needs. It has not been easy on us since my spouse lost his job more than a year ago.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I paid for a deposit of KES 2000 for a solar panel which I bought on credit and will be paying KES 50 daily for it for a year. It is retailing at KES 40000 which is expensive and the monthly installment is a great deal. I did not have any source of lighting instead I used my phone as the source of light but it doe not have sufficient lighting for the whole family. My spouse had started constructing some rental houses at the nearby center, unfortunately, he lost his job due to the Ovid 19 pandemic, so he left it halfway. I, therefore, spent KES 10000 I spent on timber for roofing and saved KES 25000 for the labor and other expenses that might be incurred in the process of the construction. The rest of the money I spent on both my children's school fees so that I could clear the balance they owed the school and on food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband used to work in the city in a certain company. He was earning a good income, but when Covid 19 emerged he lost his job which was the only hope we had in the family of 9. This brought a lot of sadness to me because we had an ongoing project ( business house) and it had to suspend. Receiving this money means finalizing it. I am planning to spend 70,000 KES to complete the house. This will induce income for my family because in a month I can earn 10,000 KES. This is sufficient to sustain all our needs such as food. In addition, I will spend the remaining part of the transfer to purchase a 3000 liters water tank I will use to harvest and store water for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
A month ago, I got the news that the Give directly organization has started enrollment in our village. This brought a lot of joy to my life. I can say that it is a dream come true because the transfer will enable me to fulfill my longing of completing my business house which will be a source of income for my family of 9 members.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Securing a good job is the biggest hardship I am currently experiencing. I am a full-time housewife who depends on my husband. He used to work in the city but unfortunately, he lost his job when Covid started. Since this happened he has never managed to attain another one. He rely on casual jobs and the wages of 400 KES in a day are not enough to sustain all our needs. This has made most of our projects pend.
