I am newly married with a family of 3 and trying to make ends meet through a motorcycle taxi. My wife is a housewife and I have been aspiring to own a dairy cow which she will be looking after while I do the motorcycle taxi. This will improve our sources of income which will lessen the burden on the family. With an approximate cost of KES 35,000 for the first transfer, I intend to purchase a dairy cow which will be used as an additional source of income. I am happy that soon my life will be transformed through the funds from Give Directly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last 6 months, we managed to harvest 5 bags of maize and this has brought joy and happiness to our lives. Even though it was not a bumper harvest, we are glad that we have sufficient maize for food from our one-acre piece of land. Harvesting that amount of maize is high in our region due to the maize necrosis disease which has been affecting our maize plantation. We are not affected by food insecurity in our family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Maize necrosis disease is the challenge we are currently facing. We have been battling the disease for almost 9 years now. In our one-acre piece of land, in which we grow maize, we hardly harvest more than 5 bags of maize on it due to the disease. It saddens me that we have been unable to grow alternative crops other than maize because it has been our staple food and we are used to it.
