Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8a.m and was in the kitchen cooking breakfast.I heard my neighbors celebrating and mentioning GiveDirectly and I knew they had received good news. I immediately checked on my phone and found a receipt of my first transfer. I was super happy and thankful to God.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Obtaining two heifers is my biggest difference in my daily life. This gives me joy since soon I am going to enjoy adequate milk for consumption and later when I get surplus for sale. In addition, acquisition of three meals in a day gives me a reason to smile.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my first transfer, I was excited that all the plans I had would commence. I had been spending a lot in buying milk hence I spent KES 48000 in buying two heifers. One of the heifers will calf in a few months time and we will start enjoying supply of milk hence can spare the milk expense in catering for other household items.I also bought maize worth KES 3500 which will sustain till the next harvest season. With the remaining amount, I bought clothing for all my household members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Am an elderly widow with no earnings. I depend on my children to send me money for food and household stuff. Since my childhood agriculture has been our main source of food and income, because of changes in climate and attacks by pests and diseases we have experienced long periods of hunger within our family. Receiving this amount means I will be food secure and healthy in the next couple of years. With KES 35000 I will buy a dairy cow which will provide me with milk for food and incomes from the sale of milk. Moreover,I will have livestock assets that will be given to my children and grandchild as their inheritance.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the past 6 months, I have had good health, I have not visited any health facility nor taken any medication. This makes me delighted because I can do my household chores comfortably. Furthermore, all my children are in good health wherever they are and this gives me joy as a parent.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge am currently facing is hunger. I am an elderly widow who depend on my children for survival ,this started after the produce from our lands was immensely affected by diseases. The incomes my children get are insufficient to meet my needs as well as those of their families. As a result, I have experienced periods of hunger in my life unlike in my youthful age.
