How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years, I want to focus on farming, particularly growing watermelons, as I believe it will bring good income. When I start earning from the watermelons, my plan is to open a business shop. I will use the profits from that shop to pay for my children’s education, ensuring they have a better future. Farming and business will be key to improving our lives and providing for my family. I am determined to make sure my children get an education and have the opportunities I never had. This will be a step toward securing a brighter future for all of us.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done a great job helping the poor by alleviating poverty. I appreciate how the officers do not take bribes and treat everyone equally, without any discrimination. They are always respectful and willing to educate us, which is something I truly value. The way they involve us and ensure that the support goes to those who need it most has made a big difference in our lives. I have not noticed anything bad from GiveDirectly, everything has been handled well. I am grateful for the support and the positive impact they’ve had on our community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Life has been a struggle, but this cash transfer has brought a sense of hope. I have always admired the idea of owning a cow, knowing it would provide milk for my family and generate income in case of emergencies. I decided to spend $200 to purchase one cow. This investment will not only improve our food security but also support my farming activities. I also used $250 for farming expenses, which included plowing, buying seeds, and purchasing a knapsack sprayer to maintain my crops.Watermelon has always been a crop I believed in, and I was eager to invest in it. I’m excited about the prospects of growing watermelons and selling them for a good income, which will help me support my family. I now feel more secure in my ability to take care of my four children and provide for them. This money has truly changed our lives. As farmers, my wife and I have faced many challenges, but with this support, we are beginning to see a brighter future. We are more hopeful about our farming and feel a greater sense of stability. This transfer has helped us invest in our land and livestock, and we are deeply grateful for the opportunity.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I left my phone charging at home and went to my farm. When it started raining, I rushed back to the house. I heard my phone ring; my friend was calling. He quickly asked if I had received anything from GiveDirectly. I immediately checked and confirmed that I had. I was overjoyed and quickly shared the news with my wife. We were both excited, knowing that we could now fulfill our plans. Thank you!
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before the floods, my maize crop was thriving, but unfortunately, the floods destroyed most of it. Fortunately, a small portion survived and was ready for harvest, but I lacked the funds to harvest it and was unsure of what to do. Any further delay would have meant losing the remaining crop, especially since the farm was still damp. Thankfully, GiveDirectly’s first transfer arrived just in time. Additionally, the floods had damaged my generator, and with the transfer, I was able to repair it. This repair will be a great help as I continue my crop farming, especially during the dry season.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before receiving my first transfer, my wife and I had already planned our budget. Buying furniture had been one of our goals for two years. We wanted to purchase a sofa set, but our reliance on crop farming proved unreliable due to frequent droughts and floods, which limited our yields and income. We had only two plastic chairs for our family of six. With the transfer, we spent $55 on a three-seater sofa set and $21 on three additional plastic chairs, giving us more than enough seating. The floods had damaged my generator, so I spent $30 to repair it. My maize, which survived the floods, was ready for harvesting, so I spent $20 on harvesting. I used the remaining money to pay off a $20 debt for food items and spent the rest on groceries. Getting food was a challenge, especially during the rainy season, as crops were destroyed and the surviving ones were difficult to harvest due to excess water. Thank you, GiveDirectly!

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Depending on casual jobs to earn a living has been strenuous because it is never enough. My family sometimes lacks all the basic needs when the jobs are scarce. Receiving this money means a stable source of income and that my worries on how my family will eat and live will be a thing of the past. I plan on opening up a shop in the nearest shopping center. I am excited because my life will change for the better after the transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The rains have been a blessing in disguise this year and even though we lost household items to flood I am happy we will get good harvests this season. In a months time I will harvest two acres of maize ,from which I will earn enough money for other household use. Also my family will get enough food for the rest of the year.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints are the biggest challenge because I depend on casual jobs to earn a living. Due to its uncertain nature, I hardly save up any amount for future use. My children lack enough school utilities like school uniform and books and this makes me feel bad.
