What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had embarked on constructing a rental house to supplement my income, but unfortunately, my savings ran out before I could finish the project, leaving me in a difficult situation. Thankfully, GiveDirectly came to my aid, providing much-needed relief. When I received my second transfer, I decided to use the funds to add tiles to the houses for a finished appearance. Therefore, I utilized the entire $530 for this purpose. As a single mother with three children, I also run an eatery in the township. I am delighted that the transfer allowed me to achieve my goals in a relatively short period.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The unconditional nature of the support from GiveDirectly allowed us to use it according to our needs, and it arrived as promised. So far, I have not observed any shortcomings in the way things were handled.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, my aspiration is to establish a clothing business, which I believe will increase my income and enable me to provide for my children's school fees. To realize this dream, I intend to save the money I earn from my current business and the rental house.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I got my first transfer just as I was starting to build a four-room rental on my piece of land along the road. Purchasing construction materials was a time-consuming task that I could not complete without additional financial assistance. It was a relief to receive the first transfer, which supplemented the proceeds from my restaurant. I spent $250 on tiles and another $100 on labor. I am relieved that I am nearing the end of the construction process, which includes electrical installation and wiring, painting, and the repair of windows, which I hope to finish with a portion of the second transfer. I also spent the remaining funds on clothing for my son and myself, as well as food and other Christmas-related expenses.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I was struggling a lot before receiving the first transfer because I had a lot of obligations, such as purchasing construction materials and paying household bills. This would not have been possible without the overwhelming support that has made such a significant difference in such a short period of time. The completion rate has been incredible, and I hope to finish it five months ahead of schedule.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my workplace when I received a message that, despite taking a full glance at my phone's screen, I did not read because I assumed it was a normal payment from a customer who had visited my food shop. I only saw the numbers, 55, and could not bother double-checking them because I was still serving other customers. Later that evening, a friend called, and she surprised me by asking about the transfer from GiveDirectly. I returned to the messages, and just to be sure, I checked my account balance. I had to inform my children the next day because I arrived home late after finishing the job and they were fast asleep.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising school fees for my children has been my biggest challenge. I run a food kiosk here in the village and nowadays I do not get customers due to hard economic times we are in. Food go to waste and this has put me in losses to a point I am contemplating closing. Initially before COVID I used to make make up to $10 profit but as things stands it cannot go beyond $2. This has made it impossible for me to pay school fees for my 3children in school
What is the happiest part of your day?
On the 24th day of last month, my mother gave me $3000 to construct rental houses on my piece of land. This made me happy because when they will be ready I will rent them out to tenants and this will give me the much-needed financial independence.
What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am in the initial stages of constructing rental houses in my plot and I have just done a slab. I desire to finish so that I can be getting rental income every month. Last month my mother gave me $3000 for the project and this is just a drop in the sea considering that construction is an expensive exercise. I intend to spend my entire transfer to complete this project so that I can have tenants get in as fast as possible. Receiving this money will help me have a reliable source of income every end month
