How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a tailor by profession, and my business has been so down due to lack of enough capital to run it. My new goal is to boost it by purchasing more linen materials and restocking it. This is because the picking season is about to start early next month. I will be able to make more income that would support the education of my 3 children as well as cater for other basic needs like food. Achieving this will be a great relief to my husband since he will focus on providing for other bigger needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in visiting and enrolling every poor household in the village without discrimination. Additionally, giving the transfers and the opportunity for everyone to improve their living standards according to their desire was something that was well done. In my opinion, the operations were fair enough and I feel there is nothing that the organization did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfers to purchase a one-acre of land that costs $450. I intend to use it for farming where I would grow food crops for family consumption. This will provide enough food to solve the problem of food insecurity that currently struggling with. Previously, the farm where I was practicing small-scale farming had low fertility levels and could not provide enough food. The harvest from this portion of land was enough for just a quarter year while in the remaining months we were struggling for food. In addition, I used the remaining amount to boost my husband's business of livestock selling by improving his capital. Currently, I am happy the income from his job has increased after investing part of the transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While in the kitchen at around 8 pm preparing an evening meal, I left my phone in the sitting room. My daughter heard a message which popped into my phone and she brought the phone to me. I checked the message in a hurry so that I proceed with my cooking work only for a huge figure of KES 55000.00 to reflect into my eyes. I paused and took my time to analyze the message properly and I realized that it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was filled with happiness that boosted my morale to cook faster to wait for the morning to go withdraw the money since I had several needs that I required.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can testify about the GiveDirectly transfer is that; it enabled me to start a new business of tailoring after buying a sewing machine which is generating income for my family. It also enabled my husband to get some top-up amount to boost his business of buying and selling animals that were on the verge of collapsing. This is the second source of income boosted by GiveDirectly. Last but not least, nowadays, my family gets tea in the morning for breakfast something that was taking place once in a blue moon before the transfer. I bless GiveDirectly for transforming my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a tailor by profession, getting a sewing machine was a top priority so I start my own business. A day after receiving the transfer, I withdrew and buy a sewing machine. Therefore, I bought both the sewing machine for KES 15000.00. Thereafter, I agreed with my husband to take KES 10000.00 to add stock to our buying and selling of animals business for the family's upkeep. I also bought a cow for plowing for KES 12000.00. Since it requires two cows to plow, I am waiting for the second transfer to buy the second cow so that I can start using them in digging people's farms for a price thus generating income. Thereafter, I bought two mattresses, one for me and the other one for my children. I did this because the ones we had were worn out. For the few remaining amount, I bought food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of five members. I am a subsistent farmer and my husband is a casual laborer. My family's living standard is very low because the family income is approximately KES 8000 per month. I will use KES 60000 to buy twenty goats as an investment. This will create a base for the family so that in case of an emergency it can help. The children will also use this investment to get school fees for their studies. I will also use KES 30000 to buy three beds and mattresses. Currently, the family uses sacks as their beddings. The remaining amount will help me buy a sewing machine and materials to start a business. This will give me a daily income. I will be the only person in the village with the sewing machine. This means all the market will be mine.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Drought is the biggest problem we have had in our village. We used to get water at Bodoi village which is around 10kms from my home. Two weeks ago, we received rain which brought enough water in our water pans. The water will last for a year. The rain brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My village has had a drought for the last two years now. It is hard for me to do farming due to the lack of water. The drought has caused famine. The family takes one meal per day something that has affected my children healthy. Lack of food isn't the current challenge I am facing.
