How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a goal of starting a shop business because in our community we have limited shops that lack most of the needed items. This is the goal that I had for the second transfer but I was unable to fulfill it because of illness setbacks which made me use the transfer. I am now working hard to get capital to start a shop because businesses are the ones that make people develop financially and be able to take good care of their families.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is an empowering organization. It is vivid in my community that so many residents who met the criteria were empowered in different ways. People were living in slam-like houses but they now have good houses because of GiveDirectly. Others had their children out of school due to school fees but now they returned them to school because of GiveDirectly. I could not have managed to treat my husband if it were not for GiveDirectly.I am grateful for the help. This organization is the best I have seen or heard of.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before getting the transfer, I had already planned on how I would do the shopping for my brother-in-law who was joining secondary school plus paying the first term school fees. Thereafter, invest the remaining amount of money into a shop business after buying some foodstuff for the family. Upon withdrawing the money, I did the shopping for the child who was joining form one as well as paying the school fees of KES 15000.00. Before starting the business, my husband fell sick. I started with the traditional medication which cost me KES 12000.00 in vain. I opted to seek medical attention from scientific doctors which took me a good sum of money that I can not recall. For the remaining little amount, I decided to use it for the family's upkeep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4pm in the evening, I was from work and had passed by my children's school to pick them when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I had suffered for so long sleeping on the mud floor for almost close to more than five years. I said to myself that must have been the grace of God to enable me to finally get a bed and mattress to quit sleeping on the floor, which had been making me experience so much body pains every morning when I wake up. Therefore, getting this money made me so happy because I was able to address that issue.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I am so grateful that I was able to help my husband get his academic papers from school which had been held by the administration due to unsettled arrears. This is a very big difference because with his academic papers, my husband can now get the opportunity to engage in less strenuous income generating activities which jeopardize his health. I am so grateful that he will be able to be my help in providing for our our family unlike before when he could not take part in any hard activities that were more reliant on physical strength, all thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 23500 on buying a bed and two mattresses, one for myself and another one for my children. I decided to spend that amount on these things because I had been suffering for a very long time sleeping on the mud floor for almost five years. This used to make me so sad and unhappy, as I used to regularly wake up with body pains. I was even ashamed of welcoming the GiveDirectly Field Officers to my house because I was afraid of the fact they would see my beddings on the floor and wonder what kind of person lives that life. This used to be the case because I work as a casual labourer for a certain organisation operating in our area, and the job itself is on an on and off basis not so reliable and the wages I earn are not sufficient enough to enable me to address this particular challenge and mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs and pay for my children's school fees. My husband also used to experience some body pains whenever he actively engages in any form of income generating activity which left me as the only provider for our family. Therefore, I feel so much peace now that I have a bed and a very comfortable mattress which make me sleep so comfortably and well. Getting this bed and mattresses is a source of my peace of mind and gratitude to GiveDirectly for this assistance.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My greatest dream for getting this first transfer of 55,000Ksh is to start a retail shop, which will be in Ganze town, in the shopping center. Before we moved to Ganze I was living in Malindi town, with my spouse who was employed in a wholesale shop, and he was moved to start his own shop, which was doing well. We were forced to close the business when we opted to move to our rural home, where we were faced by more parental responsibilities. I still have that dream, and I will achieve it soon.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My last has been very sick but offlate I see him very healthy, even if I lack food but everyone is okay, it makes so happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
As at now I have many challenges, but the most pressing is on the side of employment, currently am working at Komaza and it's employment on need basis, so I work 2 weeks a month and sometimes I finish a month having not been called. My spouse also is not supportive, he is working but doesn't bring enough on the table, and I have 3 kids who are all in school, and are always chased for lack of fees, we need food and sometimes we take a meal a day and thank God.
