How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a plan of expanding my cafeteria business. Once I get some money I aim to add more stock to accommodate and fulfill the needs of all the customers who visit my cafeteria. By so doing, I will be increasing my income and thus cater to my family's needs without straining.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a perfect thing for the community and it is a life-changing organization. I had not used a standard bed and a mattress in my life but through the first transfer, I was able to buy and I am now sleeping comfortably. The organization has changed the lives of the community members by enabling them to build good houses because initially, they were in slam-like structures.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing from the second transfer, I opted to complete my house which I started using the first transfer. Therefore, I used KES 30000.00 to buy iron sheets, roofing timbers, and the labor charge for the contractor. I did this because failure to could see my house incomplete for decades. Thereafter, I bought two goats for KES 6000.00 to have a symbol of GiveDirectly at my home. Healthwise, I had some stomach problems which made me seek medical attention and used KES 11000.00. I also started a cafeteria business using only KES 2000.00. This was a trial since I did not know how it would turn out and I had no experience in the hotel business. I started with making tea and some snacks and the business picked up well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am working as a temporary waiter in a small cafeteria at our nearby market center. It was around 7 am, I was busy serving my clients when I received the message from GiveDirectly on my mobile phone. Upon checking, I recognized that I had received my transfer, I felt very happy for receiving my transfer since I had not been in a possession of such a huge amount of money. I forwarded the message to my husband who was very happy about receiving our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I will be able to get a long-lasting solution to the womb problem that has been disturbing me for a very long time. After undergoing proper medical treatment, I am very sure that I will be able to get pregnant and have my child something that will restore my dignity and happiness in marriage. In addition, I will be sleeping on modern beddings to replace the traditional uncomfortable ones.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My priority is to spend my transfer to seek medical care for myself from a gynecologist. For 3 years in marriage, I have not been able to conceive due to womb problems. Every time I experienced miscarriage after getting pregnant something that had been bothered me a lot and make my life miserable. I am planning to spend KES 10,000 to seek proper medical care. In addition, I am planning to spend KES 15,000 to purchase proper beddings for my family since we had been using the traditional threads bed which is not comfortable and less durable. Lastly, I intend to use the remaining amount to start poultry farming as an alternative source of income for myself.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was married in 2020 and since then I have not been able to get a child. I once conceived and after three months I miscarried. I have gone to more than five government hospitals to seek medication but all have not borne any fruits. Receiving this money means I will go to Kilifi County Referral hospital for scanning and be able to know where the problem is.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband was seeking employment. Fortunately, in November 2021 he got a job in one of the posh hotels in Kwale county as a security guard. It gave me a lot of joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Not getting a child is my biggest challenge. I feel sorry for myself especially when I see a friend carrying or playing with her baby cheerfully. At times I babysit a neighbour's child and I just envy her that she has a bouncing baby, something I need. I just want to have a child.
