How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After completing my house and paying my son's university tuition, which was the most difficult task of all, I now want to expand my enterprise and buy a dairy cow, which I believe is the best asset given the ideal climatic circumstances in our area. To do this, I have already enrolled in a rotational savings group, where each month the 14 of us donate one person $30. Once I have earned my shares, I will buy a dairy cow. Once the cow has given birth, I will buy additional stock for my company using the money I will make from selling milk. We currently pay $0.7 per liter for milk, making it much more expensive for us to buy. As a result, we will spend less on milk, make more money, and have a second cow, making it easier for me to provide for my family's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirecty is the best organization since they do not have any connections to politicians and don't lend us money. People can freely spend their money without expecting anything in return, which allowed the beneficiaries to be welcoming and helped them improve their life because they were aware that nothing was expected of them. On the other hand, they must thoroughly investigate and comprehend the families, particularly those where there are intoxicated members, and continuously monitor them to prevent money from being wasted or spent on alcohol.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since the tuition for my son Gideon's education course at the university was still unpaid, he was unable to attend for that semester. Hence, I paid the $250 in arrears when I received the most recent transfer, and I'm happy that he finished his studies and received his degree in December of last year. He shares our joy and pride in having completed his studies. In addition, although the interior of the house I live in is not coated in plywood, the spaces between the timbers make it cooler. Thanks to the $253 I had left over, I was able to complete the building. As the house is currently clean and comfortable, we no longer contract cold-related ailments. Since I am the only provider for the family, the income from my kiosk, where I sell cereals, consumables, cosmetics, and other household necessities, is insufficient to meet our demands. Since I started receiving assistance, my life has been better, therefore I sincerely appreciate it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:00 am when I realized I had received the message from GiveDirectly that confirmed the receipt of the first transfer. My children were getting ready to go to school while I was in the cowshed. I could not disclose the news to them right there, but later in the evening when they came back from school and affirmed the promises I had given them about buying books and school uniforms. I visited the nearest shopping center and made my first purchases the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the clearance of an enormous debt that I had borrowed to take my son to school. I had struggled a lot trying to raise an equivalent amount that could possibly pay back the debt, but all sources that I was expecting kept failing me. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the generous and timely support that made this possible.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After the complete construction of my new house, just a month before GiveDirectly visited our village, I hoped to enhance both the interior and exterior parts alongside bringing in other complementary pieces of equipment that would improve our living standards. With this in mind, we considered purchasing a large water tank worth KES 21000 that has so far been collecting and holding rainwater conveyed from the roof. It is with gratitude that the frequency of visiting the community well to fetch water has reduced. I also cleared the debt I had with my brother, who had lent me KES 25000 when I was taking my son to the university. The debt had been a burden to my family for quite a long time as my brother had pressed hard after I failed to honor the payback dates I had given him. In addition, I spent KES 5000 on cutting down some trees I had and sawing them in preparedness to erect a new kitchen in the future. The last bit of my transfers was helpful in purchasing household goods that included foodstuff, new bedding, toiletries, and also a new piece of furniture.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money would mean that my son in college shall be able to complete school without deferring his studies any longer. He is a final year student studying nursing in a local college and his journey since he started the course has been so difficult due to school fee arrears. This was occasioned by the fact that I am a single parent with an income of KES. 3,000 monthly against the KES. 90,000 that needs to be paid yearly. I initially sold all the livestock we had in this compound to help him in his first year then trouble started when he joined the second year. He had to defer his studies for 2 years to enable me to make enough savings through my little income. I also sold a little portion of our land to help him go through his 3rd year. Now that he is in his final year I was worried that he might have to defer again for a year to enable me to make some savings but I can now have some peace of mind because of your transfers which I'll invest totally in his studies.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my son joined his final year of studies last month it gave me a lot of happiness because I got to reflect on how it has been hard to sustain him through the first 3 years and I couldn't help but smile that he's finally almost through. This has been God's making for sure.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenges am facing right now have been payment of school fees and inadequate income to sustain my family. I have had to deny myself basic needs like clothing and reducing the number of meals to two so that I can raise school fees for my child. It is a big sacrifice that I have made (wiping tears) to have this child in school.
