How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the years ahead, my goal is to construct a comfortable home for my children. I am determined to transform this dream into a reality by utilizing the income I will earn from selling milk. Above all, I am profoundly thankful for the notable achievements I have already made.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's operations were truly enlightening. The field officers did a commendable job of explaining the program's details, emphasizing the unconditional nature of the transfers and our freedom to utilize them as we saw fit. During the compound sensitization meetings, we were treated with absolute equality and the utmost respect, without any trace of bias. From my standpoint, I couldn't pinpoint any shortcomings in the program's operations, so I believe there is no need for improvement in any area.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I rely on farming and occasional jobs to make ends meet for myself and my family. Due to my husband's advanced age, he is no longer energetic to work. I share my home with my five children. After receiving my third transfer, I decided to invest in a dairy cow to reduce our daily milk expenses. Therefore, I spent $330 to acquire a healthier dairy cow. Financial constraints had previously prevented me from purchasing one, as my income source is not consistent. I had one before, but unfortunately, it perished. Additionally, I spent $100 to purchase a sheep, and the remaining amount was used for purchasing food supplies. I feel relieved and grateful for achieving such significant progress in such a short time.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year, my primary goal is to fatten up the bullock that I own and sell it to purchase a dairy cow that will meet the milk needs of my family of five. While I have been buying milk using a transfer, owning a dairy cow would provide a sustainable and long-term solution to our milk needs. I plan to allocate more time and resources towards feeding the bullock and ensuring that it is in good health so that I can sell it at a good price. Once I purchase the dairy cow, I will also focus on its proper care and feeding to ensure it produces enough milk for our household. Overall, my hope is that this investment in a dairy cow will provide my family with a reliable and sufficient source of milk for years to come.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is highly regarded in the village for its effective and transparent approach to providing support. The organization ensured that everyone in the village was well-informed about the process, even those who were not enrolled in the program, which was greatly appreciated. The community is grateful for the support and wishes that GiveDirectly could return to provide more assistance in the future
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Prior to receiving the initial cash transfer from GiveDirectly, I depended on selling illicit alcohol to local customers as a source of income. This presented several challenges, and I often faced arrest and hefty fines. However, the cash transfer provided me with relief from the illegal business, and I am now dedicating my efforts towards improving my farming activities, which I anticipate will yield greater rewards. Additionally, I have chickens and a bullock that I expect will grow and be useful in the future. With the second transfer, I spent $280 on purchasing a large water tank, which I am currently setting it up to collect rainwater and store seasonal piped water delivered to my doorstep. I also spent $15 on transportation fees for the tank and $110 on food for my family of five. I am pleased that we still have sufficient food, and I hope to replenish our supplies when we receive the next transfer. I used the remaining funds to pay off a milk debt at a nearby shop, purchase household items, and buy a few clothes for my children. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for their support and look forward to accomplishing more in the future.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I recall overhearing my neighbours speak about the receipt of their first transfer even though I never took the issue seriously thinking it was petty talk. It was not until my daughter came home and notified me that I had a Mpesa message showing I had received cash from GiveDirectly. This was the most refreshing news I had received in a while. I knew my grandchildren would have food. I knew this was an immense blessing to get aid during the drought season.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life today is the start of my goat-rearing project. This project, I'm optimistic it'll change my living status for the better. Goats are easy to rear plus they are drought resistant. I'm forever indebted to GiveDirectly for putting a smile on my old age.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my transfer, I recall I had to prioritize buying food for my family to suppress the drought conditions we were experiencing. We had no maize at our home. I had an empty pocket, and in my old age, I'm no longer productive and energetic as before to work. I am left to rely on my children, my poultry project, and well-wishers for upkeep. I live with my grandchildren. I spent $100 on buying two goats, $60 on foodstuff, and saved $40 for our future daily needs. I was so relieved that my grandchildren would have enough to eat in the days to come.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Since we have very inconsistent rains and get access to piped water in the village. I plan to buy 10 goats for $500. I can only comfortably rear 5 here because we have a small piece of land. My son who lives in Koriema has enough space. I will ask him to help in keeping the other 5, that will eventually grow. From this, I will be able to sell some goat yearly. This will enable me to buy food for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I currently have a family of 5, my other son's and daughters got married and moved out. I am blessed to have 10 grandchildren. During holidays,I ask my son's and daughters to send my grandchildren to visit me. They normally come in turns, these makes me really happy seeing them.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the last 3 years we've had very inconsistent rains in this village. Our farms have been mostly dry and getting food is hard. This year I planted one and half acres of land. I used $100 to prepare the land, buy seeds and plant. I grew maize, millet and groundnuts. I was very sad when I lost it all. This has made my life very difficult since I have to depend on my son's and daughters for support.
