How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I initially had a goal of buying a cow since I had never owned one in my lifetime. Owning a cow is considered a sign of wealth among my community members. Upon completion of this goal, I developed a plan of fencing my farm. I own about 2 acres parcel of land which I always grow my crops in but unfortunately livestock destroy my crops most of the time. Planning to fence it will help in minimizing access of livestock into my farm. Although I had begun the process, I have been unable to complete it. I am still sourcing for more funds in order to complete it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in organizing sensitization meetings for community members where it works. The level of organization among the staff has been super good and this has made the process of enrollment smooth and transparent. As a matter of fact, there is no one who has been left out of the program as a result of discriminatory practices by GiveDirectly's staff. There is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a total of KES 12,000 from my second transfer on buying barbed wire and KES 2500 on buying round poles which I used to fence my parcel of land. As a result, I have been able to restrict access to my land from three sides. I am aiming to complete fencing in the next month and this will enable me to get some harvest from it whenever I grow crops in it. Previously, some livestock could invade and more often destroy my crops whenever I grew crops in it. I also spent KES 30,000 to pay school fees for my husband who enrolled in a nursing course in KMTC. When he succeeds in his academic endeavors, he is hopeful to get a well-paying job thus he will find it easy to support our family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 11 am when I was checking my phone after a very busy morning. I work in a dispensary as a nurse. I could believe my eyes. There was message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I immediately inform my spouse and he felt so happy too. We had not paid the school fees for our children and I decided to sent him KES 20,000 for school fees. The rest of the money we planned on purchasing a dairy cow to cut the daily cost of buying milk. I am so happy because GiveDirectly enabled me to pay school fees for our children in time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. I depend on small scale farming and my work at the dispensary. We had always wished to buy a dairy cow but we didn't had the money to spend. We used to buy milk daily from my neighbor. Sometimes my children could miss to get milk whenever my neighbor has visitors. This was so demoralizing and stressful. Currently we have our own dairy cow. We have cut the daily cost of buying milk. We save the money that we could have used to buy milk and spent on other basic household needs. I no longer get worried on where to get milk. I have peace of mind because I know that my children would get milk unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 to pay school fees for my children in a private school. I am so happy because they were able to study well without being sent home. I spent KES 33,000 to purchase a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me. They rest of the money I used it to renovate my house to look better. I am so happy because I was able to achieve this through the support from GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream is to be able to own a dairy cow that will aid in providing milk for the family. Currently we spend $10 on milk each month. A litre is not enough for the whole family but we have to use it for 2 days. Receiving this money will mean that my family gets to own a cow and fresh sufficient milk each day. I will purchase a dairy cow worth $600, then sell the milk and use it for our homes' consumption. The rest of the transfer will be used to purchase fencing materials for our homestead such as poles and wiring, then lastly $100 will be used to buy food and clothing
What is the happiest part of your day?
During week days I work at a nearby hospital as a nurse, I spend most of my day attending to patients until evening. I love my job but sometimes I get exhausted. When I'm home with my children in the evenings is when I'm the happiest, because I get to bond with them, know how their day was and also get some rest
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced has been unemployment. My parents struggled to support me in going to nursing school and getting a Diploma, but after finishing school I haven't been able to get a job. I re-sorted to volunteering at a nearby dispensary where I get paid $120 per month. With my income alone I can't fully provide basic needs such as paying school fees for my children and my husband since he is also doing his Diploma.
