How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to build another kitchen. The one that I am having right now has grown old and is grass-thatched. The roof usually leaks when it rains. This house is the one that I have been living in before I got the transfer. I managed to build another one that is roofed with iron sheets when I got the transfer. The old one is what I am using as my kitchen since the money was not enough to construct the kitchen. I was however able to buy the trees for constructing the kitchen with the second transfer. My child has promised to buy for me the other materials needed and pay for the labor costs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel like GiveDirectly conducted their work well and they changed the lives of the people positively. There are however some young families whose houses are close to each who were left out during enrollment. I feel that they should have been considered for enrollment too since the households are independent of each other.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 32000 from the second transfer on buying trees for building another house and paying for the labor costs. I spent KES 24000 on the trees and KES 8000 on labor. I had already bought iron sheets with the first transfer. I decided to build another house because I use to live in only one house that had grown old and was grass-thatched. The roof used to leak whenever it rains. I also decided to build another house because it is a tradition in our culture that when your husband dies, you are supposed to build another house and leave the one that you use to live with him. I am glad that I managed to complete building the house and I now hence live in a good house that is free from leakages. Apart from the house, I also spent KES 5000 on paying school fees for my child who is in secondary school. I was able to clear the arrears and hence I currently do not owe anything to the school that he is in. With the remaining amount of money, I used it in buying some clothes for my child and the rest I bought food with it. I am no longer able to work since I have grown old. I hence usually depend on the money that I usually receive as a beneficiary of my late husband. He used to be a teacher. The money usually helps me in paying school fees and buying food. I am hence grateful to GiveDirectly for the help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home relaxing when my son's wife came and informed me to check my phone that there was some good news. I requested her to check it for me since I cannot read due to illeteracy. My heart was filled with joy when she informed me that GiveDirectly had deposited the promised money into my account. With the money in my account, I knew that my dream of building a house would soon materialize.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have been able to build a house for my family. I am glad that I will be able to demolish my current house very soon and move into this newly built house. I had not been able to achieve this on my own due to lack of finances. I can comfortably live knowing that I have followed tradition after the death of my husband who was our bread winner.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40000 to build a more spacious house for my family. This money catared for building materials like 28 pieces of iron sheets, nails, timber and paid for the labor. My husband died three years ago and according to our tradition, our current house should have been demolished after a year or two from the day of his death but I had not been able to follow this due to lack of money. Also, I spent KES 6000 to pay school fees for my son and to buy for him pair of school shoes. Using the remaining KES 8000, I bought food to last my family for some time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a jobless widow with five kids. My husband died in the year 2019 due to throat cancer. He passed on after we had used most of his retirement benefits and even sold some of our assets to seek medical care. He left me with two kids who were still schooling, one at Kamongil Secondary form four and the other in college. Receiving this money means that I shall be able to pay my son's school fees fully and that they will be able to get a quality education due to ample time for learning.Being sent home to collect fee balances will not be part of my sons and thus they shall excel.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day. This is the time I get to relax after grazing and taking the flock to drink water downstream.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Living in a small hat which leaks a lot is a great challenge to me.From the time my husband died I have had to put ends meet for my kids. Despite leaving in this old hut and bearing the shame it brings on my face when visitors are around I have heard to struggle a lot in paying of school fees as well as putting food on the table.Lack of finances is the biggest challenge I have had in life.
