How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to renovate my house which is not in a good state. Two of its walls are weak and the roof is very old. During the rainy seasons, I have been suffering and sometimes forced to shift to my friend's houses and seek shelter together with my children. I believe that when I will be in a position to renovate my house all these troubles will come to an end.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well, especially in its unique operations. The idea of helping us financially stood out because we all had different problems in our households. Therefore, giving us equal opportunity to choose what to purchase was of help as well. I, therefore, do not see anything that GiveDirectly failed in its operation across the region.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying pipes, a water tank, and all sorts of materials to install fresh water in my compound. I am so glad that for now I no longer have to trek to the dam which was around 20KM. I used to complain of back pains and unending headaches as a result which made me not able to do my other house chores. To add to that, I bought two dairy cows at KES 35000 which I am currently keeping in my compound. I am positive that having them will bring a positive impact on my life because, in a few months to come, they will start producing milk. I will therefore be in a position to supply them to my neighbours and nearby dairy shops and earn a living. I am currently jobless and I feel it's high time I need to support my spouse to raise our twelve children without struggling. Initially, some used to stay at home for weeks because of the arrears, apart from that we would skip meals regularly. It's now a relief to us because I trust the cows will serve as a permanent solution to all the problems we've been going through. Finally, with the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember vividly it was around 6 in the evening when just relaxing after having a very busy day, then I heard my phone vibrating. I decided to take the phone and gave it to my son to check who could have sent the mesaages. Upon reading, he confirmed it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I was overwhelmed with happiness for this great fortune. this will remain to be one of these days that we will live to remember.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a water supply on my homestead. Initially, I used to strain and could walk for a long distance of 10KM to fetch water which was tiring. It has been affecting me healthwise, especially the unending headaches. Apart from that, it was not safe at all because of the dangerous animals that have been hanging around the dams. I feel there is a relief for now because I do not have to walk all those miles like before. To add to that, I have started a new business of selling water to my neighbours and generating an income. I have now been able to take good care of my six children without straining unlike before whereby I used to sell charcoal for them to eat.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 53000 of my first cash transfers on buying a big water tank and paid all the requirements for water installation in my homestead. It has a desire to start this project but I couldn't afford it because it was very expensive. I now have relief because I do not have to trek to search for water. Also with the remaining amount I have been buying food for my family and another household needs that I was lacking at the moment.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We access water five kilometers from my home compound and we use motorbikes at a fee of 150 KES per trip. Receiving this money means assistance to me, I intend to open a water kiosk for home use and commercial use. I will buy water tanks for storage to sell at a higher price when the taps run dry. With the remaining amount I have three children still in primary school, I will save the money to take them to secondary school so that they can be independent in the future. I hope for a better tomorrow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I educated my firstborn up to the university level with loans. I thank God, last year November he got a job to work with the county government. In March he bought a piece of land and built me a permanent two-roomed house to stay in. This brought joy to my life knowing there is joy in nurturing your children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am married as a second wife and my husband stays mostly with the current wife. I ventured into selling vegetables but with the economic condition, I sell at loss. Revenue from this business is insufficient to pay school fees for my children and grandchildren. I feel overwhelmed when my six children are sent home because of school fees and I am unable to take them back.
