How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The transfer enabled me to build a new decent house. I was previously living in a small Hut that was grass thatched. Through this money, I was able to purchase building materials which include iron sheets, building poles, nails and also paid the mason for his job. My life is different because I now live in new iron roofed house. In addition, I also bought some goats which to me are assets that I can readily depend on in case of any financial challenges. I would not have acquired all these had it not been GiveDirectly coming to my aid.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in ensuring that this money targets the person whose living standard is low, and assisted so that they can improve their lives. The money has changed our living standards because at first we owned nothing, but now we have been able to construct new decent houses, paying for our Children's school fees and also acquired livestock such as cows and goats, all acquired through this transfer. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 11000 of the second transfer to purchase a new bed and a mattress and replaced the old beddings that I have been using for years now. In addition to this, I also purchased four goats at KES 10000. I am expecting these goats to reproduce and increase in number. Through them, I can sell in case of a financial need. I spent the remaining amount to cater for the basic needs such as foodstuffs and on paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference is that previously I was seeking shelter from my brother who was not at home most of the time. However, I was not happy and not comfortable with this. Through the transfer, I now have my own house living comfortably with my family.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification early in the morning and on checking, it was from GiveDirectly that I had received my first transfer from them. I was very happy and peaceful again on the thought that soon I would be constructing my own house which I have not been able to do for a long time. In fact, I switched my phone for some time for I could not hold the joy that filled my heart on receiving the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of the first transfer I received to purchase Iron sheets, building poles, nails and other building materials to construct a house. I am living with my parents after leaving my matrimonial home. I did not have a house and I was sheltering in my brother's house with my family and for sure, life was tough for me since I was not comfortable living in his house. I am happy that I now have my own house and enjoying my own privacy. In addition to this, I paid for the labour and other small expenses that I incurred in constructing this house. I also paid a portion of the transfer for my children's school fees in order for them to continue being in school and avoid being sent away for fees. I purchased food and other basic necessities for my family on the amount that remained after construction and school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I stay next to Shaka secondary school and I intend to spend part of my transfer on operation of a small canteen in the school compound. I find this as a good business venture as I will be able to prepare tea for the teachers and the students hence making a living out of it. The profit earned from the business will enable me to take care of my family's needs like food and school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daily routine begins at 6 am in the morning when I take my bucket of doughnut to Shaka secondary in order to sell them to the students and teachers. This is the happiest part of my day as I am able to sell and get about Ksh 300 which I spend on buying food for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been having chest problems for the past 3 months. This has prevented me from doing a lot of manual jobs that require a lot of physical effort and to make matters worse I am not able to raise money that might be required to seek proper medical attention.
