How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a kitchen house. I used to have a grass thatched house which made cooking not easy. I do casual jobs and the amount of money that I get through this casual jobs is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including buying building materials. I had always wished to own a better house. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to build a better house. Currently I have a better kitchen and it has made cooking so easier. I have devoted much of my time on my daily activities without getting worried. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to build a spacious and better kitchen. I used to have a small grass thatched kitchen. Cooking was not easy because there was no enough space. I also bought two goats the rest of the money I build a poultry house. I had bought some hens with the precious transfer. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I learned that I had received my forst transfer at around 9 AM when I was heading to the farm. Due to the excitement that had I remember having going back home and shared the food news with the rest of my family members. We prayed and celebrated as a family for receiving such a huge blessing into our lives which meant a lot to us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having the livestock that I am currently keeping in my homestead brings the biggest difference in my life. Through them, I am assured of acquiring and benefiting a lot becasue currently, I have started experiencing the goodies. With the dairy cow, my children are now enjoying the milk which is a surplus to their daily meals. Also very soon I will start selling the reming liters to my neighbors and generating an income. Also, for the chickens when they multiply I will be selling the mature chick and generate an income as well. I will be saving the money from both businesses and pay school fees for my children and this was the main reason why I settled in purchasing the livestock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, and threads. This was for the construction of a kitchen. I later bought some livestock such as a dairy cow and chicken at a total of KES 31000. I settled some debts in the nearby shop where I had been taking foodstuffs for my family. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuff for my family and some other household items such as plastic chairs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
When we got married a year ago my wife was still ongoing with her college studies. Immediately when we moved in her parents abandoned her and they didn't want to pay her school fees anymore. This meant that I had to carry the burden of paying her school fees. I tried my best to pay the fees but since I rely on casual jobs I could not sustain the burden. She had to defer her studies to another time when we shall be able to cater for it. At the moment I have been feeling that she won't be able to continue after all. Now that I can expect these GiveDirectly transfers, I can finally see hope in her studies she'll be able to complete her college education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My workday usually starts as early as 5 a.m and by noon am done. The afternoons, therefore, become the happiest because I usually have time to rest after making some money.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I got married I thought that my in-laws would help us to get my wife to complete her studies but to my surprise, the burden was left to me. I had a lot to bear at that time being new to marriage. Now when her school fees was left to be upon me, I faced the biggest hardship in my life.
