How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My lifelong ambition is to open a furniture store. Begin the process from the ground up by sourcing my own wood, hiring my own artisans to create beautiful furniture, marketing and selling it myself. I'm confident that by doing so, I'll be able to provide a better life for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has had a huge impact on both myself and my community. They have enabled us to accomplish so much and have given us hope and an opportunity to uplift without expecting anything in return. We are extremely grateful to GiveDirectly as an organization and as a member of our community.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Thanks to GiveDirectly funds, I rented a 1-acre plot of land where I am now growing watermelon. I quickly paid off my 50% debt on a power saw and stocked up on food for myself and my two households. I say two because I have two wives: my first (with whom I am still married) and my second (with whom I am no longer married). We share 8 children, and some of the money was used to pay for their education tuition. My sixth-born is the most expensive, requiring $200 per term at Misihu Secondary, while the others are in various stages of completion, pausing and starting their educational journeys, primarily due to a lack of funds in the past. My wife works at a small grocery store near our house, so we've needed all the financial help we could get to help us both deal with our responsibilities. We couldn't thank them enough for their assistance.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 in the evening when I was with my spouse in the living room discussing where we would get the needed cash for my medication. I then realized that there were two messages on my mobile phone. Upon checking, I confirmed that I had received my transfer. I felt so happy and I remember saying a special prayer to thank God for seeing us through.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life that I will forever mention is the fact that I was able to clear my hospital bill. After receiving the cash, I had to seek medical attention because of the pains I have been undergoing for almost a year. I could barely work or and we had to depend on my spouse for all our needs. Therefore, getting the cash for the proper medication would take ages. However, after the checkups, I was diagnosed with appendix issues and I had to be admitted for almost three weeks. I am now healthier and happier because I am doing so well and I am no longer in so much pain courtesy of GiveDirectly. I have even resumed my daily hustles with so much strength and energy. I will forever be appreciative of all these miracles because if it were not for them, I would still be suffering.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 43000 of my first cash transfer on clearing my hospital bill. I was diagnosed with appendix complications and I got admitted for about three weeks. I am so thankful for this massive support from this organisation because through them I am not experiencing any pains like before after seeking better medication . Also, I bought a second-hand power saw because before then, I used those of my friends which were extremely expensive. I am happy for now, whatever I will be earning will all be mine. Lastly, I bought food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The main economic activity in this area is selling charcoal and firewood. I have identified a gap and I therefore plan to buy a chain saw machine. This is a machine that I know to operate well and I have been dealing with wood and firewood for sometime now. A second hand machine will cost me around 35,000 KES. This will be a more consistent source of income that will ensure that I get between 800 KES to 1,000 KES in a day. I have a balance of 18,000 KES to complete the purchase of the small piece of land which I am currently residing. I plan to complete this with this money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been paying for this piece of land for a while now. I am almost done so that I can have full ownership. I moved in during the month of February and I am glad that I now have a place of my own. This is what has brought me joy in the last few months.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The drought situation in this area is very challenging. This brings about scarcity of food and water. Life is very expensive for me because basic commodities are very expensive because they are rare. A good example is fresh food like vegetables which one has to source from very far. It is very difficult living in a village set up and buying food because farms produce nothing.
