How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has greatly changed. I can now sustain my income and provide for my family with my motorbike that I bought with the Give Directly transfers. Give Directly greatly changed my life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has done well in the assistance it has brought to the people in my village. Our lives are improving with the transfers and truly Give Directly has uplifted our lives. A lot of people have engaged in activities that develop and improve their lives. The community is full of praises of the assistance that Give Directly has brought. I have not seen anything wrong that Give Directly has done. I am only grateful for the assistance.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers to purchase a second hand motorbike for business at 45000 KES. I will use the motorbike to offer transport services to customers who will in turn pay me. This will ensure I have a means to sustain my income and provide for my family. I used to wait around at the motorbike terminus in my village for any rider who would give me a chance to ride passengers in his bike for some little income for myself. Some days I would get lucky and have someone's motorbike for some time, but there are days I would go back home without any luck. I am very grateful to Give Directly that finally I have my own motorbike. I never really imagined I could ever have my own bike. I can now sustain my income and also provide for my family. Give Directly has truly done great things for the villagers here and we are all truly grateful.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life since I received this transfer from Give Directly is that I now have cows which I was not able to buy on my own. Since I have always depended on my small-scale farming, I have not been able to buy some because of my low income from farming. I am glad now I have my own which has given me respect among my peers in the community.i
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken up by the notification from my phone at around 5 am in the morning. I was reluctant to check since I was still sleepy. On checking, it was a message from MPESA indicating I had received money from GiveDirectly. For sure, I couldn't sleep any more, I was so happy that I forgot that I did not have a meal the previous night.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets and timber which I used in putting up a new house. The one I have been living in is a grass thatched house and it has not been comfortable because it has a leaking roof. Since farming is my only source of income, I was not able to buy building materials on my own. I also bought new bedding with part of the transfer because the one I have been spending on were old and my blanket was torn causing me sleepless nights. The remaining part of the transfer I used in buying food for my family since we did not have enough in the house. I feared soon enough we might start skipping meals as it was the case before I received this transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means my life and the future of my kids will change in a better way. GD has come at the best time. I see myself empowered and capable of doing projects that I've always dreamed of.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time I get a chance to rest having ensured that my family get its daily needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I've faced in life is lacking basic needs after losing my father . Life back then was unbearable, and since I was in lower primary level at school, my performance deteriorated. A had to drop out of school because the only need my mother could cater for was food.
