How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different because I now live comfortably in my newly built house. we were living old Previously I lived in an old house with some cracking walls. Also, it was very small and it could accomdate some of my family members. I also own a apir of oxen whcu are bnow helping me in ploighung my farm. Before the coming of GD, I have been hiring from friends which were very costly. I will now save the money and meet some other needs. I am planning to hire them to my neighbors and get an income and this will boost my standard of living.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did everything so perfectly the fact that the officers were not biased in any way. They enrolled in every resident in my village. We were also given the opportunity to plan on our own what we wanted to buy using the transfers.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part f my second transfer o buying a pair of oxen worthy of 40000. I then bought some beddings such as a bed, mattress and some bedsheet 8500. These are now giving me a peaceful and comfortable night's sleep. I also paid school fees for my children for KES 1000. The remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household item eg new utensils.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Owning a spacious and permanent house is the biggest difference in my daily life. I have been longing to build a better and more spacious house but due to my financial status, I could not afford to do that. Since I was married for over 40 years ago, I have been sleeping under a small hut which was so uncomfortable and hectic especially during the rainy seasons. My children have been sheltering at their grandmother's house which was also small. Life became so tough the time my hut collapsed. I had to sleep in my neighbor's and relatives' corridors. This has been the most embarrassing experience in my life. Actually I have never been happy in my marriage. But the coming of GD has brought up happiness.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was wakened up by the vibration on my mobile phone. I decided to ignore the message since I could not expect it could be from GD. But my heart was not at easy I decided to read the message. I could not believe what I saw because it was a message from giving directly. They have sent my first transfer as they had promised earlier. I was so much excitement at the moment...
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, cement, timber, and some nails. This was purposely for the construction of a new house. The previous one was a small hut with an old leaky roof. I then bought some goats as my potential assets. I decided to buy them because of the climatic condition in my village and they also reproduce twice a year and thus gives me hope that I will become wealthier in a short period of time. The remaining amount of money I bought some sufficient foodstuffs for my family that would take jus to the next harvesting season.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband worked so hard to build us a decent house made of bricks but could not complete it because the funds ran out after he was fired from his formal job. Receiving this money means we will be able to finish construction by building a ceiling and replacing the old leaking iron sheets with new ones. We will then invest the balance in livestock particularly indigenous goats that can survive drought and are easy to maintain in terms of feed and disease control. This will help us ensure that our children who are still in school get an education because we will be able to pay for it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest time is in the morning because I don't have much work to do after the children leave for school. However, in the afternoons, I set out to the forest to collect firewood which I sell to put food on the table.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Because of financial instability which has been a great burden to us after my husband lost his formal job, only 2 of my 11 children managed to complete secondary education. 4 dropped out after primary school and are hustling jobs in Mombasa town while 1 got married out of frustration. The rest are still in lower primary and am praying and hoping that their fate will be different now that Give Directly has provided us a way out of this misery.
