How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Through the transfers, I managed to clear the medical bill for my mother in law bill since she has been unwell for years but we could afford the money needed for the treatment. While she was undergoing the treatment, she went to be with the Lord but still I am grateful for this organization In addition, I have always wished I had my own sewing machine, but I could not afford to buy one since the machines are very expensive. For all those years, I have been working from my friend's workshops and I used to be paid on commission. The salary was very little that it couldn't meet the needs of my family. The money I get from this business is much better than what I used to work for someone. I at times hire one of my friends and get an income and this has really empowered me in so many ways and I can now cater to my family's needs with ease.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirctly did well in all the sectors. The money was sent directly to our mobile phones which reduced the cases of theft and bribery. Also, the registration was free and fair and the exercise impressed everyone in my village, therefore I do not see any part that this organization failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on clearing some medical bills for my mother-in-law. She has been sick for quite a long time but we did not have enough cash for medication. Therefore after receiving the second transfer I had to take her to the hospital since my spouse is jobless. Unfortunately, her condition worsened and because of her old age, she passed on a few weeks ago. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I vividly remember that day as if it was yesterday. It was around eight in the morning when we were from taking breakfast with my family when I heard the message notification on my phone. After checking its content, i relkiazed it was an Mpesa message from Give Directly. I felt so happy and started shouting and celebrating with joy
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to purchase my own piece of land. The previous one was very small less than an acre and this leads to low harvesting products hence poverty. Also since it was a family land I never had the pride to refer to it as my own farm. Therefore after getting my transfer that was the top priority to purchase one however expensive it is. And I am glad i made it and it has made me proud since I never thought I would achieve this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a piece of land in one of my nearby villages. This is because the previous one was small and every planting season I was forced to lease one from friends. I also bought a wooded door to replace the old one because it could no longer hold the hinge to the wall because the screw holes were a bit loose. I later bought some decent clothes and enough foodstuffs for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have for a long time wanted to own livestock at my home. Receiving this money will create that opportunity whereby I will buy 3 dairy cows and five goats. Each cow will cost me 150 USD while each goat will cost me 30 USD. My children like taking milk and therefore getting milk for consumption will make them happy. Surplus milk will be a source of income from me when I sell. The off springs from the livestock will then help me pay school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
House chores like fetching water and cleaning my utensils ,house and compound keep me busy during the morning hours. I leave for my tailoring classes at mid morning and come back home a 5 pm. I prepare food for my children and by the time I relax,it is usually dark. My schedule is very tight and the only time I relax is when I am in bed. This makes it the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on my husband's income since I have no other source of income. This has been a big hardship because one person being the sole provider cannot satisfy all the family's needs. I have always admired to do a course in dress making but lack of money has lagged me behind. Sometimes when my husband lends me money I save to enable me learn tailoring skills through apprenticeship in a neighbouring tailor shop. I pay 6 USD in a month and I have not been able to attend classes consistently due to lack of money.
