How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
No, I planned to purchase a bicycle which has been helping me in transporting water from the dams which were very far from the dams. Initially, I used to hire from my friends which were expensive. Most of the time, I have been using my hand when carrying the water which was tiresome.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly GiveDirectly does well by supporting us financially. According to be this has been the best organization ever because we were all allowed to choose what we would wish to purchase. This has enabled us to own beautiful houses, livestock and pay fees for our children. On the other hand, I do not see any sector GiveDirectly needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on clearing a hospital bill for my mum who has been ailing for a while. She was diagnosed with chronic tuberculosis. For years she has been complaining unfortunately we did not have sufficient funds for accessing better medication. For now, God has been doing wonders, she is doing well. Also, I bought a new solar panel at KES 15000. This has been helping me especially at night and charging my phone and those of my neighbors at a fee hence generating an income. I also cleared a dowry of KES 15000 to my in-laws who have been frustrating me for a while I never had peace of mind. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While carrying firewood using my cart from the forest at around 10am, my phone rang in the pocket. Without even a clue of what the message would be about, I took the phone and opened the message. To my surprise I saw a big amount of money which I haven’t make since the day I started the firewood business. It was KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. I felt so excited for getting the money which I was only hearing from neighboring villages.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The water hardship has been a bother in my life since it takes someone to walk to the water point for like an hour one-way and only come back with a single bucket of 20 liters. But getting the bicycle has been an achievement because it fast and it carries at least 3 buckets at a time. Again I can say, if it were not for GiveDirectly, I wouldn’t have the cows. In other words I can say that, I got cows through GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My mother who was living in another village where she wasn’t registered, as son I took KES 15000.00 and gave it to her so that she could do her stuffs without straining. Thereafter I bought a bicycle for KES 16000.00. This bicycle aids me in fetching some water for domestic uses since the water pots are very far away from our homestead. I also bought 2 cows for KES 16000.00. These cows will soon be producing milk both for selling and for family use. I also bought 6 buckets for storing water for KES 600.00 and used the remaining amount for food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means companion. I am 45 years old but single. My ambition has been to marry and settle but due to financial constraints, this has hindered me from achieving my long-time dream because I can not pay the dowry. I am planning to spend KES 40,000 of the transfer on the dowry for the start. This is going to boost my self-esteem because sometimes I feel people make jokes about me. Also, I will spend the remaining amount to built a spacious house so that we can leave it comfortable. Currently, I am staying in my mother's house who returned to her parent's home.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is my happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I have time to relax after a long day of charcoal burning so that I can meet my basic needs such as food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a good source of income has been the biggest hardship I have faced in life. I work as a charcoal vendor, this job is very tiresome and earns KES 300 in one sack which can take almost 3 days for it to be ready for sale. This has hindered me from achieving my dream of marrying.
